Humphrey’s McGee

Written on November 2, 2016

Umphrey’s McGee played an incredible three night show in Philadelphia on the 20-22. Now if you haven’t heard of the band before, they are a jam band so they play instrumental improv along with their studio songs. I had the opportunity to see them on Friday the 21 out at the Philadelphia Fillmore. The band started out with some of their heavy bass and rock guitar sounds and slowly morphed into an incredible acoustic 3 songs. The first set lasted about an hour and a half. After playing their crazy songs they needed to take a 20 minute intermission just to come back with a song called Nothing Too Fancy which is exactly the opposite of what the title says. Shortly after that they brought a guest bassist named Brownstein from the band Disco Biscuits which is also a jam band out of Philly. Brownstein helped play one of Umphrey’s greatest songs, In The Kitchen. They also played a cover of the Nirvana song, In Bloom, but with a country twang that gave the song some character. The band finished out the high energy night with a cover of Join Together by The Who. This was probably the best Umphrey’s setlist I have seen in a while. You too can hear the sweet sounds of Umphrey’s McGee because they record every concert as an album. Umphrey’s McGee is one band to really check out! -Jon G
