From buying $30 bags of dog food to buying toys and treats, its a big cost. It seems like a lot – until your pet gets sick or injured. Emergency trips to the vet can cost a couple hundred to a couple thousands of dollars. Pet insurance can help reduce these costs. In this blog, we will explore the different types of pet insurances and what expenses they cover.

To start off, we will discuss the basics. There are two main types of pet insurance available.

Comprehensive coverage covers the most out of the two options including:

Accidents

Injuries

Chronic illness

Infections

Hereditary issues

Diagnostic care

Emergency care

This type of coverage covers a lot of the typical health problems that every dog goes through at some point. It is a bit more expensive at it costs on average about $585 for dogs and $350 for cats per year.

Accident-only coverage has less benefits that comprehensive and covers accidents including:

Accidents

Injuries

Bites from animals or insects

Swallowed objects

Accidental poisoning

This type of coverage is a safety net for any obscure accidents that might happen. While these accidents do happen, they aren’t very common so you might not use it as much comprehensive coverage. This coverage also provides a cheaper price at about $194 for dogs and $126 for cats on average per year.

You can also choose to add more services and coverage for an additional price like plans that would cover your yearly check-ups and shots or dental.

There are also many different pet insurance providers so here is a list of 10 of the best to choose from:

Embrace

Best For Superior Benefits

Pets Best

Great For Choices Of Deductible

ManyPets

Best For Lowest Out-Of-Pocket Claims Costs

Figo

Great For Short Waiting Period For Accident Coverage

Lemonade

Best Price For Kittens And Puppies

Spot

Best For Annual Coverage Choices

ASPCA

Great For No Waiting Period For Special Conditions

Nationwide

Best For Unlimited Wellness Coverage

Prudent Pet

Great For Extras

TrustedPals

Great For Service Dogs

All in all, you know your pet best and what they need from their healthcare. If you can afford this extra expense, I would suggest you invest in it as it can save you a lot of money in the long run. Ultimately it is up to you so research the many options and see if it works for you and your pet.

References:

https://www.forbes.com/advisor/pet-insurance/best-pet-insurance/

https://www.goodrx.com/pet-health/pets/how-to-shop-for-pet-health-insurance

Pets are expensive, there isn’t any arguing about that.
