Meet Your Faculty – Ms. Megan Matthews

Department: College of Arts and Communication – Theatre/Dance, College of Business and Economics – Management

What was your favorite subject in school & why?

Music was definitely my favorite! Theatre too. I liked project management when I was in college – Gantt charts are very cool! I wanted to be a project manager when I graduated; turns out that’s pretty much what I did, in one way or another.

What was your least favorite subject in school & why?

Calculus and Statistics.

What were you doing before you came to Whitewater?

I ran a local arts agency for a couple of years, ran several special events, did communication work for a state agency about safe drinking water and their grants program, did research on arts in education, and did strategic planning for several organizations. Eclectic! But if you think about it, it was all about planning and managing process, organizational culture and schedules; I just did it in a variety of environments.

What made you want to teach?

I love the rhythm, energy and vibe of a college campus. There’s nothing like it. Being around students when they are figuring out what is possible is energizing and exciting! I also like to be around learning in general; it’s just fun.

What professional experience do you bring into the classroom?

Planning, event management, communication, and bringing diverse people to the table to work toward a common goal. In almost every job I’ve had, I’ve been a “dot-connector”; someone who pulls together ideas, people and resources. I haven’t figured out how to put that on a resume yet…

What do you like to do outside of the College of Business & Economics?

I know it’s dorky, but I get a kick out of my family. I enjoy spending time with my husband, my kids, my cat and my dog. I like to read, play piano and I love to sing! I’m involved with my church too.

What is something that students would be surprised to learn about you?

That I can actually be quiet sometimes. 🙂 I love being around people, and I like 98% of the people I meet – but sometimes I just need to be quiet and not be in front of people.

What is something about teaching that was unexpected when you first began?

That not everyone was as excited about what I was teaching as I was! I thought everyone in my class wanted to be a full-fledged arts administrator. I got all excited about helping them learn about board development, programming, marketing artistic products, community engagement, organizational culture and structure, and even fundraising – but not everyone was as excited as I was. Who knew?! 🙂
