But this year, I want to celebrate a different kind of love. The kind that grows quietly, shows up every day, and eventually starts to feel like home. This is my love letter to the University of Wisconsin–Whitewater.

One of the first things that makes UW–Whitewater so special is its small-town feel. There’s something comforting about being in a place where campus and community blend together so naturally. Whitewater doesn’t feel overwhelming or impersonal; instead, it feels familiar. You begin to recognize faces, settle into routines, and feel grounded in an environment that’s welcoming and supportive. It’s the kind of town where life slows down just enough to let you enjoy the moment—and that sense of comfort carries into campus life as well.

Athletics, especially football, are a huge part of what makes UW–Whitewater feel alive. Our football team isn’t just successful, they’re a symbol of pride and tradition. Game days bring the campus together in a way that’s hard to replicate anywhere else. The energy in the stands, the sea of purple, and the shared excitement make you feel like you’re part of something bigger than yourself. Even if you’re not on the field, supporting the Warhawks creates a sense of unity that defines the UW–Whitewater experience.

Greek life has played one of the most meaningful roles in my college experience and is truly one of the best decisions I have made. Being part of Greek life gave me more than social events, it gave me a community. Through Greek life, I found people who support me, challenge me, and celebrate both the big moments and the small ones. It taught me leadership, responsibility, and the importance of giving back through philanthropy and service. In a campus that already feels close-knit, Greek life made UW–Whitewater feel even more like home by giving me lifelong friendships and a strong sense of belonging.

At the heart of campus life is the University Center. The UC is more than just a building, it’s where campus comes together. Whether it’s grabbing food between classes, attending meetings, studying, or simply spending time with friends, the UC is always buzzing with activity. It’s a central gathering place that reflects the spirit of UW–Whitewater: welcoming, connected, and full of life.

That homey feeling is something UW–Whitewater does exceptionally well. Professors take the time to know their students, classmates become familiar faces, and campus quickly feels like a place you belong rather than a place you’re just passing through. There’s comfort in the routines, walking to class, studying in favorite spots, and sharing everyday moments that eventually become memories. It’s not flashy or overwhelming, but it’s real, and that authenticity is what makes it so special.

UW–Whitewater may not be the biggest university or located in a major city, but that’s exactly what makes it special. It offers a sense of belonging, pride, and community that’s hard to find elsewhere. Through football Saturdays, Greek life connections, and the everyday moments that make campus feel like home, UW–Whitewater has become more than just a school; it’s a place that shapes who you are.

So this Valentine’s Day, I’m celebrating a different kind of love. A love for a campus that brings people together, creates lasting memories, and truly feels like home. Thank you, UW–Whitewater, for the community, the pride, and the experiences that make being a Warhawk something to cherish.

With appreciation,

Maddy Cook

Proud Warhawk

Dear UW–Whitewater, With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, love is usually associated with romance, flowers, cards, and candlelit dinners.
