My name is Eydie Furnett, I use they/them pronouns and have been working at the UC for a year as the Video Production Assistant in UC Graphics and Marketing! I also work at UWW-TV on campus, and I’m part of the Beekeeping Club! I’m majoring in journalism with a broadcast/print/web emphasis, and minor in expressive arts. A fun fact about me is that I’ve only missed one therapy dog session at Andersen library in two years. In my free time, I like to make art, go to thrift stores, hang out with my friends, and play with my dog, Trudie! As of recently, I’ve been watching “Attack On Titan”, as well as swimming in my pool.

Tell us a little bit about your department.

I am the only Video Production Assistant. Despite this, it’s a super collaborative job! I work with my coworkers in the UC to produce videos that highlight student life, information, and videos just for fun! I’m super passionate about taking a seemingly ‘boring’ video topic, like how to set up a photo backdrop, and making it fun! We’ve all been there with those training videos.

What does an average day look like working for the UC? What does your position entail?

I often say that I’m like SpongeBob, because I love going to work! An average day working at the UC starts with me clocking in and checking my email! I network with a lot of campus departments to get the footage I need, so I reach out to them often. I frequently work with the HawkCard Office, Warhawk Dining, and Building Operations. Then, I’ll begin to work on a video, anything from a funny Instagram reel to a video showing the uses of Purple Points. One of my favorite parts of video editing is browsing the copyright free music library, and finding some jams to put in the background of my videos! Occasionally, I water our office plant, Eydie Jr.

Why should students visit the UC?

Students should visit the UC because it’s just a great place to be. There’s a spot for everyone, and it’s such an energizing place to hang out. One of my favorite places to visit in the UC is the Serenity Space in the Warhawk Connection Center because there’s a lot of sun and beautiful plants there. I also enjoy going to the UC Live events, and can be found at almost every craft or karaoke event. My favorite event that I’ve attended is a tie between Warhawk Wipeout and the Petting Zoo.

How will your position at the UC help you in your future career?

My position at the UC has helped me explore diverse video editing, as well as assisting me in creative brainstorming! Coming up with a new way to tell a story is one of my favorite things, and is definitely valuable in the real world. I’ve expanded my means of networking, and have mastered the professional email. As of now, I’d love to work in the corporate video world.

Explain a little about the connections you have made working in the UC.

I’ve made so many connections working in the UC! Since I go to so many different events to record, I run into new and old friends all the time! Working in the office with my coworkers has also allowed me to expand my social network, and I’ve made some really good friends here. I recently got to table for SOAR, and met so many incoming students! I hope to see them all around campus.

How do you balance school, work, extracurricular activities, and a social life?

Balancing everything can be challenging, and this is something that I’m well versed in. Having a lot of project-based classes, as well as two jobs and attempting to have a social life can be super difficult. The most beneficial way I’ve learned to balance everything is to give yourself time to be bored. Doing a mindless task, such as coloring in a coloring book, is a good way to take it slow. Being bored allows you to listen to your emotions and thoughts that may have gotten pushed aside during a busy day. College is a great place to thrive, but it’s important to breathe every now and then without the guilt of not feeling productive.

Hello!
