Daniel’s General Contractor managed the project and Tom Laufenberg was appointed as Job Superintendent. In this role, he spent countless hours in the building supervising workers to make sure all the necessary tasks were being completed.

Before arriving on campus on August 1, 2012 to begin removing the old interior, Laufenberg had not seen the building. “When I first heard of the project,” he noted, “I definitely did not envision this.” Although the skeleton of Drumlin sustained the construction process, the interior looks like an entirely new building. Although the skeleton of Drumlin sustained the construction process, the interior looks like an entirely new building. The upper level contains six dining concepts ranging from pantry-style breads to home-cooked meals and international cuisine. The former window deck has also been expanded to increase seating for the second floor alone to over 400 people. Additionally, the lower level houses an Erbert and Gerbert’s and a convenience store as well as lounge areas. These improvements help to create an avant garde facility that takes an entirely new approach to student dining on campus.

As Job Superintendent, Laufenberg made it his personal responsibility to make sure the completed building would exceed the expectations of students and the UW-Whitewater community. Throughout the process, he persevered building complications and other set backs. “Things always come up along the way with projects like this,” he mentioned, “but the goal is always to get it done well.” After seeing Laufenberg’s work, anyone could easily ascertain that “well” is an understatement. The new structure capitalizes on the uniqueness of the student dining experience through innovative designs and materials, including tiles from Italy and Spain as well as a countertop built from stoplights.

Now that renovations are complete, Laufenberg is confident that the new facility will be well received by students: “There are a lot of different materials, interesting designs, and dining concepts. There should be something for everyone.” The UW-Whitewater community is appreciative of this sense of commitment Laufenberg integrates into all of his work and incredibly grateful for his contributions to the campus. After all, he is the man who built Drumlin.

Drumlin Dining hall opens today, April 3, at 11:00 am for students who live on the west side of campus.
