The 4th Wall with WordPress

What is it?

Last week, I covered a JavaScript framework called Angular. It was pretty awesome. But I realize not everyone is ready to get into the nitty-gritty of doing their own coding. So next up is WordPress, where little to no programming experience is required.

WordPress allows you to:

Create a free website or easily build a blog on WordPress.com. Hundreds of free, customizable, mobile-ready designs and themes. Free hosting and support.

What are the features?

  • Responsive design
  • Built-in social media sharing
  • Widgets
  • Theme customization
  • Google Analytics

For a blog content creator, WordPress utilizes an admin panel to centralize customization for the user. For users, there is little opportunity for interaction with any given blog beyond commenting or sharing.

An initial fear is that this would be hard to foster a strong community. However, if the intent is producing content over building a community, it seems like this will be a good medium for achieving that. Additionally, the low ceiling on technical knowledge needed to use this lends itself to greater accessibility, allowing more people to produce content who otherwise might not know how to.

Although I already have some experience working with WordPress because of this blog, I’ll do a lot more experimenting with it for next week’s post to try fully understanding the pros and cons of this tool. Be sure to come back in a few days to see my findings!
