After many delays and pushbacks, on May 7, 2025, the Real ID deadline came into effect. Requiring people who flying domestically, accessing federal government facilities, military facilities or nuclear power plants have identification documents that complies with the Real ID act of 2005.

As the summer travel season is weeks away, ordinary people who plan to fly domestically are certainly double-checking their IDs. As those who do fly without an ID card that isn’t Real ID compliant will go thought extra screen and could miss their flights, causing delays and complications.

While some argue that there should be more time for people to get their document updated, other think that 20 years is enough. “I think 20 years is plenty of time to implement something like this.” UW-Whitewater American Government professor Larry Anderson, “They shouldn’t have kept pushing it back because either way at some point, you just have to rip the Band-Aid off. and generally speaking, I support it.”

The Real ID act was passed in 2005 as a response to the September 11 attacks requiring US states and territories have standardizes security measures when issuing ID cards.
