Player Profile- Serena Williams
Serena Williams is a famous tennis player who began playing when she was only three years old when her father started training her. Her father learned how to be a coach through books.
Already at age ten she won 46 games and only lost 3. She was ranked number one in her age division. In 1995, Serena turned pro and moved from ranking 304 to 99 just in twelve months. In 1999 she became the second African American woman to win the Grand Slam singles tournament at the US Open. In that tournament alone, she beat two top ten players. Those players were Monica Seles and Mary Pierce. Already in 2002 Serena became the world number one and she has continued to earn that rank five more times.
Serena has come across some struggles while playing tennis. In 2003 she had to go through knee surgery which kept her from playing tennis for a few months. In 2009 she verbally attacked a lineman for a foot fault. This ended up costing her a lot of money ($82,500). This was actually the largest consequence against any tennis player. However, she did eventually apologize publicly for her mistake.
Coming to 2017, she wont her 23rd Grand Slam title at Wimbledon actually beating her older sister Venus Williams at the Australian Open. By achieving this win, she moved up to the world number one ranking. Serena Williams has the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles and mixed doubles compared to every other active player.
