Double OT? No big deal for Austin Peay

After a hard-fought final game Austin Peay’s women’s basketball team will be heading to the NCAA tournament hoping to make history for themselves, and for their school.

Austin Peay’s women defeated Eastern Illinois’ Panthers in the final game of the regular Women’s basketball season. It was a tough game, the conclusion of regular time found no winner and was sent into over-time, and the conclusion of the first OT found no winner either.  Austin Peay finally pulled ahead in the second over time to get one up against their opponent beating them 69-65. To have a better understanding of just how close this final game was, let us dive into what occurred during the game, and get an insight from coaches and players.

Shooting stats for both teams were below par, as both Eastern Illinois and Austin Peay had a hard time finding success from the field, as both teams field goal percentage was below 50%. Austin Peay’s coach Carrie Daniels had some kind words about opposing Panthers after the close finish, “They kept fighting, that’s what they do.” Peay’s Ashley Hearing lead the charge for the W as she completed 9/16 shots and ended up with a team leading 21 points. April Thomas was close behind going 4/10 and contributed 13 points to Peay’s stressful win. EIU had a hard time keeping control of the ball and resulted in turning the ball over 25 times. EIU senior Lindsey Kluempers had some words about the game, “It just wasn’t our day. They made more plays than us.” Panther’s Rachel Gilligan put on a show converting 12 of her 15 attempts from the field and ended up with 24 points, however, her teammates could not seem to find the back of the net as they struggled to convert from the field. With this win Austin Peay will be traveling to the NCAA tournament next week in hopes of furthering their winning streak. Eastern Illinois still has a chance to reach the National Invitational Tournament.

Match Recap; Real Madrid vs. Eibar

Spanish soccer league La Liga is equipped with some of the best clubs, and plenty of amazing star players on each club. Real Madrid is no exception, hosting some of the best players around the world and is surely not a team to be taken lightly. Real was scheduled to play Eibar on the tenth of March, with most fans on either side agreeing Real Madrid would grab the win easily.

Real Madrid marched into this game against 8th place rival Eibar looking for a win and getting one step closer to clutching 2nd place in La Liga. The game started off slow, the first 30 minutes saw no action and only a couple scoring opportunities for either side. Real was having a hard time keeping control of the ball, and the entire pace of the game. The star team even had a hard time getting the ball out of their own half. A slow start for Real Madrid, which is something many fans did not think would happen. However, Real Madrid’s jewel Cristiano Ronaldo was the first to break the ice in the 34th minute. With a clean pass from Midfielder Luka Modric, Ronaldo was able to get his team a leg up against Eibar.

Five minutes after the half, Eibar’s forward Ivan Remis was able to cleanly connect with his header from teammate Pedro Leon’s corner, equalizing the game, and making Real a little nervous. Coming up on the closing minutes of the game, Real Madrid was given a good attacking chance in the 83rd-84th minute. The ball came in off the wing from defender Dani Carvajal’s cross into the box, where Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo headed it past the keeper with ease, snatching up a win for his club and collecting the game ball for the day with his two spectacular goals. Real manager and ex-Real star Zinedine Zidane had nothing but praise for his club and stated Ronaldo was, “from another galaxy.” Real Madrid will be looking to continue with their winning streak and continue their great form throughout the rest of the competition and are hoping to be able to grab some silverware with the conclusion of the year.
