{"id":34,"date":"2018-10-04T14:05:02","date_gmt":"2018-10-04T14:05:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/schultzhe21\/?p=34"},"modified":"2018-10-04T14:05:57","modified_gmt":"2018-10-04T14:05:57","slug":"lets-hear-it-for-the-dream-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/schultzhe21\/2018\/10\/04\/lets-hear-it-for-the-dream-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Let&#8217;s Hear It for the Dream Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This past weekend, Sept. 28-30, four Jefferson County 4-H members took a nine-hour trip to Grand Island, Nebraska for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aksarbenstockshow.com\/\">AKSARBEN Livestock Judging Competition<\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The senior team competed all summer at county, district, regional and state livestock judging events. Their hard work prevailed after winning the state competition, securing their spot at the national competition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/4-h.org\/about\/what-is-4-h\/\">4-H<\/a> is America\u2019s largest youth development organizations. The organization spans across every county in every state, focusing on developing skills and friendships that will last a lifetime.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">One of the most popular 4-H programs are the Career Development Events. Here, students can participate in livestock, dairy and meat evaluation contest. The goal for each participating team is to win state and earn a spot at the national competition in Nebraska.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Jefferson County\u2019s Senior 4-H Livestock Judging team\u2014made up of Danielle Chwala, Alexis Schultz, Trevor Messmer and Colton Klecker\u2014accomplished the goal, in the livestock judging portion.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-35 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/schultzhe21\/files\/2018\/10\/43082498_394585464412116_2264242832157966336_o-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/schultzhe21\/files\/2018\/10\/43082498_394585464412116_2264242832157966336_o-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/schultzhe21\/files\/2018\/10\/43082498_394585464412116_2264242832157966336_o-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/schultzhe21\/files\/2018\/10\/43082498_394585464412116_2264242832157966336_o-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/schultzhe21\/files\/2018\/10\/43082498_394585464412116_2264242832157966336_o.jpg 1440w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been doing livestock judging for 10 years and I\u2019ve finally made it to AKSARBEN,\u201d says Chwala. \u201cI\u2019m nervous, because I\u2019ve never been to a national competition.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Livestock judging consists of four main skills including animal evaluation, oral reasons, industry questions and data analysis. Contest participants typically spend eight hours at a competition moving from station to station. Each section receives a score out of 50. A team is allotted four members to contribute to the overall score. There are individual placings awarded, as well.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThe worst part are the reasons,\u201d Chwala says. \u201cWe usually have to do three sets, and it\u2019s all memorized.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">This is the second time, in four years, that Jefferson County has had a national livestock judging team. Before that, the county was on a losing streak for 12 years. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI\u2019m very proud of my team this year and the team that fueled the fire under the county, four years ago,\u201d says Ed Bielinski, Jefferson County livestock judging coach. \u201cThese kids have been working so hard, and that\u2019s all I can really ask of them. I\u2019m very proud.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The team finished the competition in 17 place and a great experience under their belts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cThis was kind of like my last hoorah,\u201d says Schultz. \u201cI\u2019m in college now, so I can\u2019t compete in 4-H anymore. It\u2019s bitter sweet, really.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Although an unfavorable placing, the team plans to return to competing\u2014apart from Schultz\u2014in hopes of winning state and having a second chance at the AKSARBEN national livestock judging competition.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This past weekend, Sept. 28-30, four Jefferson County 4-H members took a nine-hour trip to Grand Island, Nebraska for the AKSARBEN Livestock Judging Competition.
