February Ideas

For many of us bulletin boards are due in just 4 days.  As we all know the BIG holiday in February is Valentines day and whether you think it is a pointless holiday or are in LOVE with it, there are many ways to spin it to make a great bulletin board for the month of February. Along with Valentine’s day some other things you can focus on are black history month, ground hogs day and its history, presidents day, the superbowl, safer sex/STD prevention, healthy relationships, loving yourself or anything really for that matter.  Here are some things I found.  When pulling ideas from the internet make sure to really make them your own by tweeking the information or making it more applicable to your floor.  Get creative and have fun.  I suggest finding your information or the message you want to convey and going from there.

obioneforme

Good luck everyone.  If you think your bulletin board is the BEES KNEES please send us a picture of your bulletin board and a blurb about the information presented on it.  We would love to see the hard work that you all are putting into your job.  Not only is it a chance to highlight your own work but also a way to help others by providing inspiration!

STAY WARM and happy Tuesday.

“The sky is the limit” goal setting

The folks over at The RA Guide have some wonderful ideas and inspirations for on the job.  The site offers examples and step by step instructions for bulletin boards, door decs, hall decorations, recognition incentives, and programs.  Here is a neat compilation of how to tie the theme “the sky is the limit” together by utilizing door decs, the hot air balloons, a program with the study abroad department or goal setting 101, and finishing it off with a goal centered or inspirational bulletin board.

Check them out. Many of their posts include templates for the door decs.

HAVE YOU MET SHAYNA HERR

With each new semester comes new RAs to the position and here is one of our new hires that hails from Wells West.  Shayna Herr is a sophomore who likes to go tent camping during her summers! She says, “I like to find state parks in the Midwest and stay there for a couple nights with a friend or two. Hike, swim, bike, relax…If you have any cool suggestions of places to go – hit me up! :)”  She is looking forward to: “The experience! Gaining knowledge about people, situations, even myself! I’ll be able to apply it to my personal life as well as my future career. I’m also looking forward to being a leader and an inspiration to others. Not only that, but I believe that my residents and staff will inspire me to be the great RA I want to be. Thanks in advance ;)”  Her floor is in her words “…awesome! Super social and funny. Easy to get along with.”
have you met shayna
So that is Shayna. If you see her around welcome her to the family.

Happy Monday

Here’s to a new semester!

goals RA blog

Welcome back everyone!  As the new semester is starting, think back to last semester and come up with a couple new goals in regards to the position itself.  Do you want to program more or tackle a different programming subject.  Your goals are up to you and only you can really track how you compare to the standards you set for yourself.  With these goals make sure they are S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound) and challenge your residents to do the same thing whether is is a goal in their personal life, academic, or job related.

Here are some other tips for attaining your goals:

WRITE THEM DOWN and put them in a spot where you are going to see them all the time. This will serve as a constant reminder of what you are striving for.

TALK ABOUT THEM with other people, this will make you more passionate about them and will help to hold you more accountable to them if others are aware about them.

BREAK IT DOWN AND TRACK YOUR PROGRESS. By breaking your goals down into smaller pieces you are able to make small-term goals out of your long-term goals. This will make you feel more successful and will allow your lofty long-term goals to seem more manageable.

SURROUND YOURSELF WITH SUPPORTIVE PEOPLE.  Surround yourself with individuals who will be supportive of your goals and aspirations, not Debby-downers that will tell you that you can’t do it.

BE WILLING TO REVISIT AND REVISE:  It isn’t necessarily a bad thing if you do not reach all of your goals but you should be able to succeed at a good chunk of them.  Don’t be afraid to look at your list of goals and change them up a bit either to make them more attainable or more challenging, depending on what is needed.

Here’s to the semester and your goals.  Hopefully you are liking all of your classes so far.
