{"id":29,"date":"2017-10-02T20:13:00","date_gmt":"2017-10-02T20:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/pwpmentors\/?p=29"},"modified":"2017-10-04T22:20:48","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T22:20:48","slug":"more-from-chapter-4-ellipsis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/pwpmentors\/2017\/10\/02\/more-from-chapter-4-ellipsis\/","title":{"rendered":"English 362: More from Chapter 4: Ellipsis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to the sentence types we are learning about, Chapter 4 introduces the term ellipsis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ellipsis: <\/strong>refers to the omission of a word or words that can be supplied.<\/p>\n<p>Although ellipsis rarely occurs in simple declarative sentences, they are much more likely to appear in more complex sentences<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 1&#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The ninja latched his grappling hook onto the window sill, hauled himself up, and entered the Hokage&#8217;s private office.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are three verbs in this sentence (latched, hauled, and entered)\u00a0assigned to only one subject (The ninja). Intuitively, we know that the all the verbs are predicating &#8220;the ninja&#8221;, and it is not necessary to include &#8220;the ninja&#8221; before each verb. That\u00a0omission is\u00a0an example\u00a0of an ellipsis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example 2&#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Merry and Pippin stole, unwrapped, and launched the fireworks.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here &#8220;Merry and Pippin&#8221; and &#8220;the fireworks&#8221;\u00a0 undergo ellipsis. There is no need to say &#8220;Merry and Pippin stole the fireworks, Merry and Pippen unwrapped the fireworks, and Merry and Pippin launched the fireworks.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ellipsis in Imperatives<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The understood subject or addressee of imperative sentences can also be seen as an instance of ellipsis.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Example&#8211;<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Give me my precious!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>instead of&#8230;.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>(You) give me my precious!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>-The understood subject of &#8220;you&#8221; is the instance of ellipsis<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In addition to the sentence types we are learning about, Chapter 4 introduces the term ellipsis.
