This constant show of growth with no sign of slowing down has given Esports a large pedestal giving it a pathway into the public eye letting it leave its niche origins behind as it transitions into a mainstream form of media entertainment. But for people who aren’t as knowledgeable about Esports they always ask a similar question; why do Esports matter? This question can be answered in many different ways and the answer can vary from person to person but there are certain things about Esports that might lead unknowing people to have more interest in them.

One of the ways to get people to understand why Esports matter is by talking about the economic impacts from Esports. As mentioned in Rosell Lloren’s 2017 article,eSport Gaming: The Rise of a New Sports Practice, “It is widely recognised that, over recent years, the video game industry has developed into a highly profitable business” shows how more people are recognizing the monetary benefits of Esports, this can be especially noticed by the amount of large sponsors that continue to put money into these events such as companies like Redbull and Monster. Additionally Esports have helped add more jobs to the market such as event organizers, casters all the way up to pro players and all of this can be attributed to these corporate partnerships which have helped turn esports into a thriving economic ecosystem, creating jobs, expanding media coverage, and solidifying its place as a legitimate and influential industry.

A packed stadium of fans at the League of Legends World Championship 2025 (esportsindier.com)

Furthermore to continue on with the topic of why Esports matter to our society outside of their economical impact Esports have also had such a massive impact culturally that it can’t be ignored. Esports have shown time and time again that they can pull in the same amount and maybe even more viewers and spectators as traditional sports. Esports has created global fan communities, international events, and shared online spaces where millions of people connect over the games they love. This cultural presence has helped esports lament itself as a major form of media entertainment across the globe.

At the end of the day Esports matter to a lot of people from all around the world, from viewers in their own house all the way up to the pro players that compete in these games Esports are something special and unique to a lot of people and as such they can not be ignored as just some small hobby. Beyond entertainment, esports have had a major economical impact from their massive sponsorships and million dollar tournaments which helps show what used to be a niche interest has grown into a global industry worth billions of dollars. Esports are becoming the next big thing and the industry only plans to get bigger and bigger as time goes on. As esports continue to expand in scale and influence, they are proving themselves to be a lasting and meaningful part of modern culture, not a passing trend.

References UsedRosell Llorens, M.
