To first understand the growth of Esports and how they became a major entertainment of today one must go back and look at the humble beginnings of Esports. According to Esportsinsider the first recognized event of Esports actually came about in 1972 with a game called Spacewar! at Stanford University, this event was actually sponsored by Rolling Stones magazines where the grand prize was a free subscription to Rolling Stones magazines. From this moment the motion of Esports only continued to grow as more and more games started forming their own competitive leagues. According to hir.harvard.edu the major boom for Esports in popularity can be credited to South Korea stating “The South Korean government, in an attempt to soften a severe financial crisis, focused on developing their internet and telecommunications infrastructure.” This would lead to things like gaming clubs rising up and gaining popularity in South Korea which only caused the notion of Esports to rise higher and higher. When the government of South Korea noticed this insanely popular trend they would lend their hand and create something known as the Korean Esports Association or KeSPA for short. KeSPA was one of the first government agencies to focus on video games and Esports regulations worldwide.
Thanks to the growth of Esports people are able to look at video games as more than just a hobby but can instead see them as a potential job or even a gateway into other career fields with technology for people there are endless opportunities for those that pursue Esports whether just as a competitor, viewer or maybe even something like a game developer.
