The 2024 battle for the starting role at quarterback is going to be an interesting one for the Wisconsin Badgers with the battle being between Miami transfer Tyler Van Dyke and redshirt sophomore Braedyn Locke.
Tyler Van Dyke, a seasoned veteran with 28 starts and over 7,000 passing yards and 54 touchdowns under his belt from his time at Miami, was initially expected to be the frontrunner for the Badgers’ starting quarterback position. However, spring practice has shown that the race is far from over, with Braedyn Locke proving to be a formidable competitor. Locke, who has shown impressive improvement and familiarity with the offense, has made the decision for the coaching staff a difficult one.
As the battle continues over the summer, the coaching staff will be looking for consistency and more leadership from Van Dyke, who has shown improvement and comfort in the spread offense during the latter part of spring practice. However, Locke’s performance in spring practice has been nothing short of impressive, with his accuracy and ability to stand in the pocket drawing praise from observers.
The competition between Van Dyke and Locke has been described as intense and open, with neither player able to seize a definitive lead during spring practice. This has led to speculation that the battle could extend beyond spring practices and into fall camp, making the final decision a nail-biter for fans and players alike.
Offensive coordinator Phil Longo has acknowledged the competition, stating that both players have unique strengths and that the coaching staff is looking for the best fit for the team. “Both of them talent wise can make all of the throws, do all the things they need to do.” Longo stated, “Braedyn has the advantage of having a year with this system under his belt..I’m very happy with regards to Tylers development with his decision making.”
As the competition continues, we are left here to speculate on who will ultimately win the starting job. While Van Dyke’s experience and impressive play from his time at Miami make him a strong contender, Locke’s improvement and familiarity with the offense have made him a serious underdog for the starting role.
Wisconsin probably won’t name the winner of the competition until the first game of the year, August 31st, against Western Michigan.
