I thought the most interesting aspect of this video was the idea that the more ways that people can be connected, brings out more innovation and creativity in idea creation. The creator claimed the main reason this has been the case is because historically as humans have had more ways to communicate, they have had higher periods of innovation. Such historical examples can be rooted to the age of enlightenment and modernism. He backs up this claim through the idea that many ideas have been created off other people’s hunches and when people have more ways to communicate, it makes it easier to combine hunches and create a good idea. I never thought about idea creation that way and now I know why innovation has had its high periods during increased times of new communication technology. I have been watching the new season of Shark Tank and a product that intrigued me was the product “BABY TOON SOFT BABY SPOON”. This product was made by a young entrepreneur and she combined many other products hunches to create her big idea in this product. The product is a baby spoon, teething device, and it can connect to a baby’s bib, so it doesn’t fall out of the baby’s high chair. Just like the video she saw a problem that needed to be solved and combined many ideas to make her own unique product.

I thought the most interesting part about this video was talking about how we are being consumed by the internet. He is not wrong, I think we all spend too much time on the internet. But, at the same time it all depends on how you use your time while being on the internet. We are more distracted but there are so many new ways to connect to new people that have that “missing piece” for someone to build and improve their ideas while they are in that slow hunch phase. Important ideas take a long time to evolve and it can be helpful to get the insight of others to figure out where your new ideas can go and flourish. I also watch Shark Tank and a product that I thought was very interesting and something that I would use was the Tailgate N Go Outdoor Kitchen. A man and his children all love to go camping but would always end up forgetting something everytime they would go. He realized that he would forget utensils, things to clean up with, and an area to cook on. So he combined the look of a tool box with the functionality of tailgating and camping and put it into one. He realized that his is most liekly a problem for people other than himself and wanted to fix it.

I found one of the most interesting parts of this video the idea of the “slow hunch.” I think a lot of people think that great ideas come suddenly in a lightning bolt “ah ha!” moment. This is often not the case, as they described in the video. Most good ideas take many years to really come together, and they often require collaboration and input from others to make it really come together. I think it was also really interesting how he pointed out that the internet might be detrimental to the slow hunch, since we are really moving towards a world of instant gratification and increased distraction. One of my favorite products lately is my AeroGarden. It’s a hydroponic garden that I can grow herbs or lettuce in. What makes me think of it in relation to this video is it was a really innovative idea to be able to have a personal hydroponic garden to grow herbs in all year. This is especially helpful in Wisconsin! I love to have fresh herbs to cook with, so I really make use of the garden and I think that it was a pretty innovative product. What makes it such a great idea is it is easy, mess-free as there is no soil involved, and it is small enough to fit on a kitchen counter. It doesn’t require natural light, and is pretty easy to use. Here’s a review I thought hit a lot of the highlights of the AeroGarden I use:https://www.businessinsider.com/aerogarden-harvest-review

I think what I found most interesting about this video was the fact that he said yes, technology is more us more distracted but it can also be used for good. I definitely agree that the more technology advances, the more we are becoming distracted and the more we are becoming isolated. What I did not think about is the fact that technology could be helping our ideas and be helping out future innovations. I like how the video said that technology and social media could be helping us, because we put our ideas out there and we get the opportunity to hear more people’s ideas and for ideas to get formed together and create new ideas by putting your ideas and someone else’s idea together. I am not sure if this product is new, but it is new to me and I just learned about it. A company called Farmers Fridge sells salads that go into vending machines for people to eat for lunch. I think this is really cool because you don’t see a lot of healthy options in vending machines like salads its usually just candy or chips or drinks and I think this is great to see that healthy options are going into vending machines.

One of the things I found most interesting in this video is the idea of the “slow hunch.” A great idea takes time to come about and become reality. A great idea needs to colid with other great ideas. This help the idera become better than it originally was. Two hunches coming together help create a something bigger than it was. The idea of World Wide Web used in this video is a great example of how an idea needs time to develop. Technology is one of those products that only get better over time compared to other products that get worse over times. A product that relates to this video is reusable straws. This idea has just recently come to mainstream because of the widespread effects of garbage in our oceans This idea took time to develop, the need for them slowly arose because of the harmful effects of non reusable straws had on the environment and its creatures.

The most interesting thing in this video, to me, was how long it actually could take a product or brand to be developed. The discussion of slow hunches being more effective was somewhat eye opening. All too often I hear people say they get some of the best results on a project when they procrastinate as well as not having the patience to wait. I am sure those same individuals would apply that to product development. Wait until the last minute, and then try to market the first thing that came to mind because they were so excited they couldn’t wait to fine tune and collide it with other hunches. Not to mention, it may take years to market the product because investors just don’t see it as an opportunity in the industry. Shark Tank is notorious for introducing us to such products. One example that many of us are aware of is the Ring Doorbell. Since before 2011, the product has been in the works to be marketed. However, inventor Jamie Siminoff was rejected on Shark Tank in 2013. It wasn’t until 2018 when the company was purchased by Amazon and became a billion dollar hit. Hard work and time pay off.

One thing that stuck out to me the most in this video was the idea of technology distracting us. This is something I could not agree more with. There has been many times I go to do homework, and I find myself scrolling through social media instead, just simply because I can. What most do not think about is that technology is good though as well. We are advancing, so this means things are getting done more efficiently. Therefore, the environment is a bit better off in certain ways. However, in my opinion, I think we should take the extra step to help with pollution in oceans with the technology that we have. We should not just focus on bettering phones and stuff that isolates the world. However, if we use technology to bring everyone together, it may be different and a bit better. I found an article that talks about how technology can reduce workplace stress. This is interesting to me because I think we all experience stress of work and anything that can help that is good. This article talks about the different technology we have and how it can be used. Workplace stress has escalated over the past few decades as our business world becomes increasingly fast-paced and demanding. Workplace psychologist David Lewis reports that a high percentage of workers are seriously stressed at work, feeling overwhelmed and unable to cope with their responsibilities. I feel that if we have to go to work, we can choose to use anything we can in order to reduce the stress. We should not hate going to work, but rather use technology around us to help us function better and more efficiently. Within this article, it talks about using a task tracker. This is something I definitely do and could not live without. It helps me organize my crazy schedule, and I do not think anything would get done if I did not have it. Mobile hotspots and portable battery packs are also something I have seen people around me take advantage of. This article was very interesting because I relate to it and see these things often in my daily life.

First of all, I thought this video was very coincidental since I actually just finished reading Steven Johnson’s book for another class. I found the book itself very interesting as was the video. The most interesting part about the video was about how even though the internet it most often times seen as a distraction in today’s society, there is still a strong argument for its benefits. Having information readily available and free to use speeds the “slow hunch” up. In my opinion, the slow hunch was slow in past times because they had to wait for bright minds to get together physically in order to accomplish something. Now, they are able to collaborate remotely and most times skipping the pleasantries that often take up more time than planned. One invention that I think is really neat is the new doorbell Ring security camera. You see these different videos about how it could save your house from a potential robbery. Also, I think it very neat about how they are starting to partner up with police forces to help them do their job better. In the video, it talked about being able to trade information via the internet to allow for faster innovation and in being able to access video surveillance, the police are able to make a case and find the culprit much quicker.

I think the most interesting thing that I found in the video is the idea that new big ideas take years and years to come up with sometimes and it is not always just one thought that appears one day and it becomes something big; rather it is a bunch of small ideas that you have come up with that collaborate with one another and combine and become one big successful idea. I also think that it was interesting when in the video the issue of social media was brought up and the question being asked was whether or not if social media is overwhelming us because it requires us to multitask and be connected with others 27-7. I thought that it was important that he had a counter-argument for this with stating that it can help connect you with other people, having two brains working together to create an idea and help innovation move more smoothly.
A new product that interests me and pertains to this video is the Instant. Although it has been out for a few years, they have only recently become more popular in that last couple years. The Instapot idea originated from a crockpot, however the instapot allows families who are busy and need a decent meal fast. The instapot has allowed families eat healthier because they are able to have meals fast rather than eating out. This follows the video because it originated form another idea but it become something more convenient for consumers who need a quick, hot meal and it had taken inventors years to come up with this idea after the crockpot had come out.

It was shocking to see this point of view of where good ideas come from but a very valid one. Growing up I never thought I had the ability to come up with great ideas but to learn that they can take years and years and collaboration, sheds new light. Because I am a mother of three young children, I am faced with the challenge to keep up with toy trends; that I have no interest, but my children are experts in. Thankfully, my children keep me very updated due to their access to Youtube. Just like the blog video’s indication of making connections, the toy industry is connecting to children and in return my children are coming to me to purchase toys for them. Aside from JoJo Siwa, which my children were obsessed about, Fingerlings were a big trend this past Holiday along with many other interactive toys, proving that technology has reached children in all ages and in differing engaging ways. Since the launch of the first fingerling, they have expanded their designs and interactive features to keep the trend fresh, including not only the fingerlings, but also the minis and the hugs. Stores sold out and even businesses were using Fingerlings as promotions.

After watching the video, I thought that the idea of ideas having to collide in order to create that a final thought was the most interesting thing during the video. I did not think of how ideas are generated, however, this idea would make the most sense because brainstorming with others is a way to create numerous of good ideas due to ideas being bounce off one another. This could also be referred to as what he was talking about in the video of how ideas are being collided with one another. One product that is interesting to me is Nike’s Presto React shoe, this interests me because Nike took two different shoes or two different ideas and put them together to create this shoe. This relates back to the video because Nike took two successful ideas and collided them into one shoe that Nike hopes to be successful as the shoes by themselves. I do not like the shoe personally but I do think it is interesting and we will see how it takes to the world.

It was interesting to me to realize that it can really help the idea process when you discuss your ideas with other people. That way, they are able to bounce off their ideas and contribute what they think. It seems that this helps creativity flow and come alive more than thinking in your own mind. Also the idea that we need time to think in depth about our new concepts was interesting. Something that came to mind when watching this video was, what if we are sharing ideas and others hear them and run? What if they make the idea because it sounds like it would be successful to them?
The company Square has made innovative changes to the point-of-sale business. I like this company because it is simple to use for employees and customers and it is fast compared to other credit card machines. I like that they include iPads as part of their set-up because it lets consumers use something they already know very well, and it has a clean and sleek design that is intriguing. They also have a lower processing cost for credit card transactions than lots of other credit card processors. I think this is relevant to the video because the credit card processing machine had already been around for quite some time. But after thinking of a way to making more modern, Square was born. They took a products and made it better. They also incorporated iPads after the iPad had been on the market for some time. They gave it time and considered what would work best for them and their customers.

I like how the video provided an illustration of how combining people’s ideas leads to innovation. One person could have a new idea, but someone else’s idea on how to incorporate it is really what gets them going. With how connected people are, it’s easy to swap ideas and thus move innovation forward. This is probably why technology becomes outdated so quickly. I have to buy my kids a new Chromebook every couple of years due to changes in technology. Google came out with the first Chromebook in 2011 but those computers are now obsolete. Due to advances in security software and changes in technology, Google does not support Chromebooks or provide updates past its Auto Update Expiration which tends to be about 5 years. They began with a basic idea, but continue to add on features and change the original idea to become something bigger and better. The newer Chromebooks have additional features and security updates that the old ones did not have. This will continue to change and evolve until the day comes that people no longer use computers, but access the internet through retinal devices by simply saying the magic word and having a virtual screen appear in front of them.

I think the most interesting thing Steven brings up is the idea that connectivity, and mingling with others, is what leads to innovation. I find it so interesting because a lot of what you hear older people talk about is “those darn kids and their phones”. I submit that, yes, as a whole, people are using their phones a little too much. But, that doesn’t mean that good isn’t coming from that. People are connecting more, innovation and creating is happening faster, more often. Now you can put an idea out there, and get instant feedback, either from peers, or like minded people.
One of my favorite new products right now is “Legends of Runeterra”, a digital card game being created by Riot Games. Much like in the video, the card game was created as a result of numerous hunches and ideas shared between Riot Games employees. Digital card games can be a chore, and feel like they exist to test your patience, and your wallet. The team at Riot didn’t like this, and have decided to innovate on the digital card game, and make it more accessible, or what they call “Building a better card game”.
I’ll provide a link to a little FAQ they did, but there’s a lot of cardgame jargon, so be warned.

I found that the hunch idea in this video was the most interesting. I’ve never thought about how small, seemingly insignificant, thoughts and ideas are truly connected to form big ideas. The internet example and elaboration was also very interesting to me. We often hear that the internet is more distracting. However, it can also be used to collaborate and gain information for even higher-level thoughts and conversations. One thing the video didn’t really touch on is that it really depends on how you use the internet. If you haven’t been taught how to use internet to be productive, it can often lead to mindless wandering.
One example that I thought of that relates to this video is cars/vehicles and their creation. This video made me think of the creation of cars because of the amount of man and brain power that goes into making each one. A lot of times, as consumers, we only hear about the last few stages of the manufacturing. However, there is a lot of time and staff of creators behind every model of vehicle that is produced. The article below goes more in-depth about this process.

In some instances, creativity is forced to be very quick because of deadlines for agencies creating advertising campaigns. Overall, I am in agreement that big ideas need time to incubate as described in the video. As someone who passionately enjoys being creative, big ideas have many steps and for the most part lots of effort. Maybe people really are born to think outside the box, but being observant of what is going on around you can help spark an idea later down the road. I also think so many people come up with brilliant ideas but just never act on them or do not know where to start. Making even a simple idea that could turn into a small business takes an incredible amount of effort. This video also discussed the many moving parts to a big idea that will eventually connect. It may take time to realize a great idea is present.

The video game Fortnite is a great example of a brilliant idea that constantly needs more ideas fed into the game. New frequent changes has kept millions of people playing the game.

The most interesting concept in this video was that good ideas come from the collision between smaller hunches. They form something bigger than themselves.
I enjoyed the example of the world wide web and how it took many years to come up with what it is today. When he started, he didn’t have a full vision of what he was going to invent. It started off as small projects and eventually grew into one whole vision. It was also interesting that one hunch could be in one person’s mind while another could be in someone else’s. You have to find a way for these to come together.
One example I thought of when watching this video was a product I heard of from Shark Tank. It is called the Lumio. It’s a foldable magnetic lamp with a cool design. This is a combination of many other ideas that are put into one new product. New products like this are invented all the time because of previous products and ideas.

The most interesting things in the video to me were the different patterns create innovative environments. I found the “slow hunch” particularly interesting. I liked the example he used of Tim Berners-Lee and the invention of the World Wide Web. It makes sense to me that many good ideas usually start will smaller hunches. I also enjoyed the points he made about the internet and how it is affecting us. I think it is one of the greatest debates today. I believe that there are both positive and negative effects that come from the use of the internet, and I think the video does a good job at describing that. The product that I think relates to this is a new football game called Maximum Football. It is a smaller football game that overtime grew to include college football rules and custom teams. For a long time, there hadn’t been any college video games because the athletes were not able to be paid for their likeness. Maximum Football realized this and grew to include the college style into their game. They now even have an endorsement from former player Doug Flutie and his name is now on the game. It started as a smaller idea about a football game, and has grown to something a little bit more.

Something that I found most interesting about this video was the idea of creativity and innovation and the “slow hunch.” As someone who over analyzes just about everything in my career, children and life in general it is almost soothing to hear that breakthrough ideas don’t happen overnight, but rather after what the video refers to as a collision of small hunches. It is so funny to me, because in the office where I work, we joke about having “half of an idea” or when get stuck on things, sometimes so obivious, we started writing them on our huddle board, and then eventually (in some cases) coming back to that idea to finish our thought, process, idea, etc… Which really relates to the video, in that we had to create systems to give the hunches to collide, or I other words continue to socialize or live our lives to allow the thoughts to come full circle. Gosh, to think that it took 10 years to create the world wide web seems unreal to me, but then again it really is no time at all.
Another thought I had today, I purchased the Apple Air Pod Pros (so far- I am loving them). I previously had some Power Beats that were slowly dying and have been researching what the next pair of headphones I was going to buy, but could not find a pair that were comfortable, noise canceling and wireless. I had always liked my Apple earbuds but hated the cord. Then after watching this video, it got me thinking that Apple released their earbuds in 2001 and then it was not until 2016 that the first model of airpods were released. How could it have taken 10 years for the internet but 15 years for the airpods? Crazy!

There were a couple things that stood out that I found interesting in this video. I enjoyed how he touched on the fact that great ideas are more times than not a slow process. I think currently, especially in the younger generations, people think that these successes and breakthroughs that we all witness just happen overnight. I also feel that many people today don’t give their ideas a chance to mature because they live with the instant gratification mindset. I also like how he mentioned that while the invention of the internet and everything that comes with it is melting our minds, it also does a lot of good as far as connecting people and their ideas. Many of the things we have and enjoy today would not be in existence had there not been the internet allowing minds and ideas to connect.
One of my favorite companies today is called Black Rifle Coffee. It is owned and operated by veterans. The owners Evan Hafer and Mat Best worked in Special Operations for the U.S. Army. While the company hasn’t been around for a super long time, Evan’s vision started back when he was serving in Iraq and Afghanistan in the early 2000s. To make a long story short, Mat had a successful YouTube channel that had many followers and was selling merchandise for it on a website. Evan contacted him via the internet and asked if he would consider selling his coffee through his merchandise website. Evan at this point was literally roasting coffee out of his garage and was selling it to mainly his friends. In 2014, Mat agreed to sell his coffee under a brand name called “Freedom Roast” and it sold out almost instantly. That one line of coffee evolved into what is now Black Rifle Coffee Company. Black Rifle Coffee Company started in Evan Hafer’s garage and with being able to connect with Mat, and turn it into the success it is today, it was able to do over 30 million dollars in revenue in 2018. It is on pace to do more in revenue for 2019 and is now one of the top online coffee companies in the world.

I found this video to be interesting because, the internet is so helpful. The video stats that years ago we had to read and brainstorm to find ideas. I could not imagine life without the internet, when I need an idea, I go straight to the internet for inspiration. I didn’t realize it took about 10 years to produce the world wide web. The Instant Pot is a new product for me, I have only used it for about 4 months, and I love it. Instant Pot Brand takes feedback from its customers to approach innovation, which plays a role in their product development process. The air fryer is another great appliance, Instant Brand now offers an air fryer oven. This product air fries, roasts, bakes, broils and dehydrates. Instant Brand air fryer is also going to be a new product for me soon.

What I found most interesting about this video is how the internet has become this gateway for idea innovation. I do and don’t agree with this. The internet has become a great source for information, creativity, and connectivity, but I also believe it has some serious cons. While I use the internet for all those things, I also rely on other sources for all those as well. Such as, people, nature, and honestly time spent away from technology. I think it’s so easy to become so involved in a world that we only see from our phones. We portray our lives through social media, and live through a phone screen. Which to me, is a little scary at times when the real live world happens around us and sometimes we never even notice. Being an art major, I always need sources of creativity and information for projects. While Pinterest has become the gateway for that, I find myself getting better ideas when I’m NOT on social media. I find some of my best work comes from my passions and intuitions. I’m searching for something new to create, I’ll take a walk and let my ideas flow and let my mind be at peace rather than showing it a multitude of potential ideas.
So a new product that I’ve been enjoying is a new camera lens I bought. The evolution of photography has changed drastically due to technology. And maybe a camera lens isn’t a “new” product, but this particular lens is new to me, and thanks to technological advances, it’s become what it is today. It allows me to capture moments and events and relive them even after they are gone.
I’ve attached an article on how the hijacks our attention by overwhelming our brains. While I still believe there are great things that have come from the internet, I thought it would be interesting to show the not so great things from the internet.

I actually read the book that this video summarizes for my World of Ideas course last semester. I’m very intrigued by the idea of the slow hunch. Good ideas need the right conditions to flourish. You may come up with the idea, but not have the appropriate context in which to apply it. You may have the appropriate context to apply an idea, but have yet to conceive of the idea itself! It’s odd that we attribute great ideas to an Ah-ha moment when that’s rarely the case. I think of it as intertextuality of ideas. One aspect of an idea triggers another aspect of an idea and so forth.
I am a loyal Honda driver. I have owned two Hondas and will continue to buy their cars in the future. Right now, I drive a hybrid Honda Insight. The idea of the slow hunch made me think of the history of Hybrid vehicles. When we think of hybrid vehicles, we think of them as a new-age development, but the technology has been in application for 100 years! The hybrid concept definitely formed from a slow hunch.

I think the most interesting thing that was brought up in this video was the “slow hunch” idea. Like many others, I always thought that a good idea was like a “eureka” moment that came suddenly and fast. However, this is not the case. It makes sense that in order for good ideas to happen, you need to connect these hunches with other small ideas in order to create something amazing. Innovation comes from all of these hunches forming together. Often times, these hunches are also connect with other people’s hunches as well.
For me, when I think of hunches coming together to form a product or a new invention, the cell phone comes to my mind. This product wasn’t a “eureka” moment, and it didn’t just happen overnight. This product originated with the idea of a house dial phone that needed to be plugged in, and then the house mobile phone, and then a cellular mobile phone, and eventually the smart phone. All of these inventions started with other hunches and ideas forming together to create something new and improved.

I really enjoyed this video. What I found most interesting in this video was the concept of hunches colliding. To me, it makes sense to further those channels of communication and connectivity between groups of people to come together for a single goal. A hunch must be communicated if there’s any chance of it colliding with another to create a new hunch and continue down that path to innovation. One of my favorite products is called Splunk. It is a data platform that was originally started as a SIEM or security incident and event management. It received logs of data from various data points in a network to centrally manage what was taking place in a network. It was used to baseline health and security anomalies. The idea of grouping data in one single location for analysis has catapulted Splunk and other similar products into new realms of what can be possible with data. Business analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence are only a few of the concepts in play with Splunk at the moment. Last week I attended a conference in Las Vegas and learned about the use cases that Porsche is exploring using the Splunk data platform. It was wildly intriguing, and I believe this approach is going to redefine our world and how we do business. The link below is from the talk I had the privilege of attending. Porsche applied their long standing business standards to how they manage data in Splunk. Splunk is taking those hunches and storing them in one place for analysis.

I found most interesting from the video that good ideas do not come alone, instead they are created by the collaborations of other ideas. It is so important to exchange and connect with other people to reinforce, or modify the idea we had at the beginning. Thus, collaboration plays an important role in the creation of the most outstanding ideas mankind has seen.
One of my favorite new products which actually it is not a new product, however the company that sells them is bringing them as economically accessible and trendy products. The product I am referring about are glasses. I remember when prescription glasses were only accessible through the optical shop in town paying hundred of dollars, but all of that has changed with Zenni. I can obtain a pair of glasses with no hassle using their virtual try-on, it is simple and easy to follow. I think the retailer offering these new products relates to the video because it has partnered with the latest technology to smooth the process of buying glasses for customers. I always recommend Zenni when someone asks me where I got my glasses, not only for the styles they offered but also their prices are affordable and they have an uncomplicated website.

I watched the blog after I wrote the discussion on new products, and I feel totally validated. The most interesting thing from the video is, innovation is hard. It takes a long time for an idea to properly bake in our brains, and sometimes we need to experience something new for an old idea to coming crashing into the forefront of our thought.
Because I had a hard time thinking of a new product for the discussion, I decided to search “new products in 2019” the link, I’m using is what I googled. I went to 4 or 5 of the links plus the initial google search list. I challenge you to show me something innovative. A new use for a product is what marketers/companies sell us as innovation. People have been wearing gym clothes for decades (check the 80’s), pet grooming products, steel straws etc. It simply proves that the video is right and innovation and creative thought is hard. Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying we aren’t trying or anything. I’m simply saying re-purposed, reshaped, recolored doesn’t equal true innovation.

The thing I found most interesting in this video was that small ideas converge to form something much bigger. Ideas and innovations aren’t spontaneous. It isn’t just one idea that someone takes off with and runs with, it is a bunch of little things working together to make something great over a long period of time. Many innovations start with someone who has half of an idea and then another part of an idea pulls it all together and makes it great. Ideas take a lot of time to be transformed into reality.
A new product that relates to this video would be reusable straws. I suppose it isn’t that new of a product, but it has really grown recently. Saving turtles was an idea and so was reusable straws to reduce waste. Putting these ideas together and advertising as saving the turtles really helped this product expand and become popular. I honestly don’t really use straws often and do not feel the need to get a reusable straw especially considering that plastic straws make up only 0.000002% of the plastic in the ocean by weight. But between the idea of a reusable straw and the saving of the turtles, reusable straws have become pretty popular.

What I found most interesting in the video is that it states that ideas come from hunches. Ideas are often formed by connecting a hunch you have with someone else’s hunch to help fill in the gaps in your idea. One of the best ways to create an idea is to foster the proper environment. The video discusses how the internet has made significant changes in how we are able to collaborate our ideas. Something that comes to mind for me personally when thinking of how new ideas are created is how in the tech industry especially in Silicon Valley is known for creating an environment for fostering innovative ideas. Thoughts and ideas are often bounced around and discussed in a form of brainstorming where no matter how crazy and full of flaws they may potentially be, they are still stated. This helps stimulate other ideas and fill in gaps in the same way the video discusses how hunches are combined to create an idea. BMW has recognized the benefits of brainstorming but has taken it a step further by hiring tech scouts to help connect hunches. BMW has recruited idea scouts from Silicon Valley, Japan, and Europe and opened up a technology scouting office to assist them with finding solutions in their autonomous vehicles. https://www.calcalistech.com/ctech/articles/0,7340,L-3756846,00.html. https://www.strategy-business.com/blog/Beyond-the-Brainstorm?gko=e0bb3.

The most interesting part of this video is the idea that innovations are built upon slowly and that the availability of information has exponentially increased innovation over the last few decades. I think that everyone is overwelmed by the amount of information they take in every day, but on the other hand people now have access to more information than any other time in history. This steady flow of ideas and access to information will continue to exponentially increase innovation by helping people connect and share ideas. Also, being connected has allowed people the opportunity to learn whenever and wherever they want to. Anything you want to know is just a google search away on a device that everyone has on them all the time. Like the video says, “chance favors the connected mind” and I completely believe that. The link I attached is about wireless charging and it’s projected growth. I think that wireless charging will soon be the standard and is also another step towards completely waterproof phones that will have no headphone jack, charging port, or speaker mesh.

One thing that really stood out to me was what he said about good ideas being formed from the collision of smaller hunches. I also thought it was interesting how ideas take years and years to be formed. It can start with one small idea, which can lead to another, and in the end create a big, great idea. Like the example he used with the creation of the World Wide Web – it didn’t just all of a sudden happen, there were a number of steps leading up to the formation of it. It’s interesting to me to learn about and consider all of the steps that have taken place in the creation of some of products I use today. For example, Apple, and hearing Steve Job’s story and how it came to be.

One of my favorite new products that relates to this video is the Ice Shaker bottle which I saw on Shark Tank and purchased one for myself. The product is designed just like the well-known plastic blender bottles most commonly used for pre- and post-workout supplement drinks. This product keeps liquids cold for 40+ hours, is ordor resistant, and sweat free. This idea came from the frustration of many that the plastic blender bottles don’t keep drinks cold, stink, and often times sweat.

Something that I found interesting from the video is the slow hunch theory and that good ideas come from collisions of smaller hunches to form something bigger. I think some of the best innovations are thought of and built over a long period of time, like the example with Tim Berners-Lee and the world wide web. It took Tim over 10 years of working on side projects to come up with the full idea for the world wide web. With time he was able to let the idea develop into something much more sophisticated than his initial idea. One of my favorite products right now are Powerbeats headphones by BeatsAudio and Apple. This is an example of an idea that took a while to think of and introduce to the market. BeatsAudio first version of Powerbeats were not fully wireless but with time they were able to combine what was already working with new technology and develop fully wireless headphones.

To me, the most interesting part of this video is the fact that most ideas don’t just come to us in a “snap”. Ideas take time and it takes thoughts and connecting with other people to ultimately have that breakthrough moment where that creativity and process come together to bring our idea or ideas to the forefront. Like he says in the video, as a society we are distracted now more than ever, but with those distractions can come positive factors as well. With social media we can connect and collaborate much easier and come up with innovative and creative ideas faster than ever before.
One of my favorite new products is the portable blender. This particular one, which I included with the URL, lets you charge it with a USB cable, so you are able to charge it anywhere at any time. You can charge it using your phone, laptop, or any other USB compatible device. With those features, it makes it very convenient for anyone to use. This product is something that probably took a little time to come up considering the challenges they face in regard to safety, design, and charging capabilities.

I think that this video was very interesting for a few reasons, but most importantly is that good ideas don’t happen over night. To me, the idea that good ideas need to be pushed and gotten out to the public as soon as they possibly can isn’t the greatest way to produce a good product or idea. I think a lot of people think of a quick pay day rather than a quality product that people will love and will have a good name for itself. Personally, my boyfriend started a company simply because he thought of a good idea and he thought that it could make him a lot of money in a small amount of time. While I have always thought that his product was a good idea, I always thought that he was pushing it far too quickly. This idea of his started about six months ago and he wanted to get it out to the public four months ago. Luckily, he didn’t jump the gun too quickly and he sent his design out to some youtubers who gave him their honest opinion and he finally took a step back and realize that his design needed a lot of work. I think the moral of the story is that we all can get caught up in a good idea, especially when we think that it has a good payday behind it.
Speaking of youtubers, one thing that I think is extremely innovative are youtubers, and those who review a certain genre of items on their channels. For example, I have been following the makeup community on youtube for about five or six years now. It’s one of my favorite things to watch on youtube because of where these beauty gurus came from and all that they have achieved within the six years that I have been watching them. Cut to the chase, while they still review makeup they now are creating their own makeup brands. In my opinion, these people are experts and why wouldn’t experts have their own products? It started with gurus collaborating with makeup brands in popular stores that sell makeup to them creating their own brands that are worth millions of dollars.

The one thing that I found the most interesting from the video was the idea of the slow hunch. Where great ideas do not come from a moment of great insight and most important ones come with time. Most of these great ideas are spent in the background not touched or talked about until they are more developed. Another thing was good ideas usually come from the collison between smaller hunches in order to form something bigger than themselves. One of my favorite new product is the Ring Doorbell. I found it super interesting that their original product was called the doorbot which they launched on Shark Tank as well. It shows that it takes time to become big and also working together with others is important. The smaller hunches would be the 3 engineers and 2 other minds coming together to develop the doorbot or ring doorbell as it’s now called.

What I found the most interesting about this video was how he explained how social media has contributed to some of todays ideas. I liked how he mentioned how much we rely on the internet, I for one can agree with that statement because I know for a fact, I utilize the interent more than I should. In this day and age people are more distracted with the web, but it is not all bad, there has been so many new ways to connect with new people and for people to find that have that missing piece he mentioned. The internet has become a way for someone to build and improve their ideas while they are working through that hunch phase. Yes, ideas do take a long time to manifest, so it can be helpful to get advice from others to see what your ideas can do. One of my favorite new/recent products would have to be a pop-socket. A pop-socket is tool that sticks to the back of your phone to have a better grip of it. I think this product relates to the video because it is no secret that it hurts when your phone falls on your face, so the creator probably saw all the complaints on the internet about slippery phones and came up with the pop-socket.

I actually just read Steven Johnson’s book Where Good Ideas Come From. He goes into great detail about slow hunches, liquid networks, and the adjacent possible–all of which I found to be very fascinating. From this video specifically, the thing I found to be most interesting is how the “historic increase of connectivity” has been a game-changer in the creation of good ideas and innovation. Technology has given us nearly endless access to information, allowing us to more easily interact with other people’s slow hunches and therefore create our own good ideas or assist others in creating theirs. One of my favorite new products are Apple’s AirPods. AirPods are unlike anything else previously introduced into the headphone/earbud market. It wasn’t the AirPod itself that was unique, it was the technology and intelligence that was paired with them. They can sense when you put them in your ear and when you take them out. With just a tap, you can pause/play, skip songs or go back to a previous track, and even talk to Siri. These AirPods are just short of being a mini phone in your ear.

I was particularly interested when he was talking about the creation of the internet and how good ideas take time. Berners Lee worked on that project for 10 years, where he worked on side projects that he continued to scratch until he finally figured out the big idea. The video then talked about the hunch state and needing to connect with other hunches from different people. I found this interesting because it makes a lot of sense. It’s really important to gather ideas from yourself and others and put them together because it can really help propel your big idea. A new product that fits with this video is the iPhone 11. The iPhone is something that is constantly being advanced and upgraded by Apple. The team at apple are always looking for ways to improve and attract customers to purchase their new iPhones. I think having a team together that bounces ideas around and works towards making the best product is something Apple does very well. https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/iphone-11/

What I found very interesting was how he stated that some ideas are not complete and need another person’s idea to finish it. I think today and why we are advancing so fast is due to the internet. Before it you might not know what is going on around the world, but now you can know almost anything. If you have an incomplete thought you can go and research and finish it. It gives even the most common person access to unlimited amount of information. Therefore, innovation is so high.https://www.nist.gov/news-events/news/2014/06/internets-next-big-idea-connecting-people-information-and-things This shows that the internist is still young and will only get more expansive. Apple one of my favorite brands was not built by one person with a single mind. Even Steve Jobs had dozens of people along to way to complete his idea. Now today it takes collaboration between dozens of teams to create Air Pods to create and Apple Watch and to create the new phones. The ideas are incomplete and when the teams come together idea can be realized.

I really enjoyed how the video highlighted the development of how ideas are developed and shared. Coffee shops used to be the go-to place to meet with others and discuss new ideas. It was there that hunches could be combined and developed into full ideas. Now with the invention of the internet, we are able to connect with someone on the other side of the world and share or borrow their haunch. We can add this to our own hunch to create our complete idea. I like the idea of working together to create new innovations.
One of my favorite products that I own is my Away suitcase. Away is a new luggage company, only 4 years old. They started with one hard-sided suitcase that featured a removable charging device. Within four years they now offer a wide range of suitcases in various sizes and with different features. A lot of the new features have been ideas that have come from their consumers or those they meet on airplanes. What started as one small focused idea has turned into a massive luggage company.

What I found most interesting about this video was the concept of slow hunch. Basically stated is that ideas may take time to develop and rushing ideas hurts the long term performance. Believe me, ideas take time and this is especially true in the world of publishing and in filmmaking. It is important to take a slower approach because research will be needed and even when an idea is given life, it lays dormant almost waiting to be discovered. Johnson stated that some ideas only take a couple of years to mature, but some take as long as twenty. It is not until this maturation occurs that an idea becomes important and is useful in life and practice. Essentially, these ideas come back to you as a sort of epiphany and become fully realized by the person who came up with the idea.
A new product that seems to fit is more of a virtual product instead of physical. What I mean is the innovation of streaming networks more specifically Netflix. Netflix and these other streaming platforms are always putting forward new features such as original programming and recent movies while consistently innovating for a changing market. It sort of was a slow hunch with streaming because most people were still into physical DVDs and cable when Netflix along with other groups competing for ideas created a streaming platform airing popular content on demand. Some like Hulu went and essentially created a streaming system which had cable programs and channel available on demand and Amazon offered discounts on products and shipping along with a stream of movies and TV. Netflix innovated through original content and later releases of many popular recent movies and high definition. The ideas of Netflix were incomplete as well as the others until competition forced innovation to separate themselves from each other and other competition.
November 3rd, 2019 at 10:25 pm
I think this video is phenomenal breaking down and covering a lot of different aspects to the potential decrease in innovations. I think something very important to take away from the video is that due to all the technology and social media, it is causing us to become less innovative. The addiction of being on our phones 24/7 is causing issues, when we could be reading, educating ourselves. The problem is, social media can 100% help with creativity and innovations, however, technology and social media has been abused, causing major issues. “Hunches” is talked about a lot in this video. I do think that collaborating defiantly helps create new ideas, however, I don’t always think that it is as effective as talked about in the video. As I am an avid outdoorsman, they have created trail cameras, where the pictures can be viewed via your phone, or you can have a “home” camera on a tree and view all your pictures from every other camera you have out on there. This reduces the amount of time you have to do to stop at every location, take out the SD card, look at the pictures, and reset it.

What I found interesting about this video is when the narrator addressed what the internet is doing to our brains. This is a question I have often thought about because our generation is immersed in the internet whereas in our parents’ and grandparents’ generation this was not the case. Despite this many great ideas were the product of many great thinkers, for example Albert Einstein and Thomas Edison. They were sophisticated thinkers that had to build on their own ideas without the benefit of being connected. Though today maybe we are thinking less because everything is out there, we are greater connected due to the internet and it is that connection that promotes innovation and the exchange of ideas. Great ideas are not hunches but when combined with the hunches of others become great ideas as the hunches are transformed and missing pieces are filled in. This connectiveness may be the answer to solving some problems that have been unsuccessfully solved in the past such as the cure for cancer.
A product that I have heard about and thought was interesting is manufactured by RevMedx and is called the XStat. This product relates to this video because it is an innovation that was the result of connectiveness and collaboration. It was developed in response to the needs elicited by the military and first responders. 90% of all combat deaths were due to rapid blood loss. Both soldiers and trauma victims were affected. With severe hemorrhaging many were not even given a chance to make it to a hospital. XStat stops bleeding in 20 seconds or less. It is a syringe that is expelled directly into the wound. It is filled with tiny sponges that rapidly expand to exert pressure stopping the bleeding giving victims enough time to make it to a hospital. It has the potential to save many lives.

I found it interesting that the increase in connectivity between people over time has driven innovation. Social media platforms make it extremely easy for people to connect and share ideas. People can get a lot of inspiration and even get help developing their ideas online. With all the people on the internet, it is an unlimited resource for creativity. Social media also easily allows brands to come up with new ideas based on customer feedback.
Curology offers customized skin care products to customers. After taking a skin quiz people can get products that suit their individual needs. Initially Curology only offered a personalized acne treatment. Customers wanted new additions to the product line like a moisturizer and cleanser. Curology listened to the customer feedback and went on to sell custom moisturizers and cleansers.

I thought the most interesting thing in the video was that new ideas don’t just appear out of nowhere, and that new ideas are usually a product of several other ideas that join together to create something new. The video did a good job of explaining the process of new ideas and how hunches from different people remain dormant because there is no use for them at the time, until one day someone puts those hunches together to create something completely new. One of my favorite products that relates to this video would be smart TVs. Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, and countless more are at an all-time high right now. However, people were required to use their computer to access these streaming services, until the smart TV was introduced. The smart TV gives people the ability to access all their favorite streaming services in one convenient place and watch them on a larger screen as opposed to a computer screen.
