Well, there are plenty of reasons to be concerned about our oceans and how they are faring, including their effects on human health, climate, and sealife. I recently read a posting on the <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.usa.gov\/roller\/govgab\/\">GovGab<\/a> blog called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.usa.gov\/roller\/govgab\/entry\/save_the_fish_save_the\">Save the Fish, Save the World!<\/a>,&#8221; with links to a number of federal government agencies that monitor oceans, and I&#8217;d like to share most of it with you here:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Recently, two <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/owow\/oceans\/index.html\">EPA<\/a> staff members joined environmental scientists and the crew of EPA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/bold\/brochure.html\">Ocean Survey Vessel (OSV)<\/a> <em>Bold<\/em> to document science and research in action.  Read their <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.epa.gov\/\">blog posts<\/a> to get an in-depth look at what\u2019s involved in protecting our waters.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/oceanfish.jpg\" alt=\"ocean fish image\" class=\"alignright\" \/><br \/>\nThe <a href=\"http:\/\/answers.usa.gov\/cgi-bin\/gsa_ict.cfg\/php\/enduser\/std_adp.php?p_faqid=7992\">Ocean Observing System<\/a>, is a network of people and technology from various federal, regional, and state organizations that work together to generate and distribute data on the nation&#8217;s coastal waters, Great Lakes and oceans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.noaa.gov\/\">NOAA<\/a> is not only responsible for daily weather forecasts, severe storm warnings and climate monitoring, but they are also responsible for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmfs.noaa.gov\/fishwatch\/management.htm\">fisheries management<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/oceanservice.noaa.gov\/topics\/coasts\/monitoring\/welcome.html\">coastal monitoring<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/aquaculture.noaa.gov\/\">supporting aquaculture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/\">U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service<\/a> has a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fws.gov\/coastal\/\">Coastal Program<\/a> that provides incentives for voluntary protection of threatened, endangered and other species on private and public lands alike.<\/p>\n<p>How can you help?  Check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nmfs.noaa.gov\/fishwatch\/\">Fish Watch<\/a> when buying fish to find out which fish populations are listed as sustainable.  You can also follow these suggestions to <a href=\"http:\/\/coralreef.noaa.gov\/outreach\/thingsyoucando.html\">help protect coral reefs<\/a>.  If you are considering a conservation career, check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pueblo.gsa.gov\/cic_text\/employ\/america\/nature-careers.htm\">Careers: Conserving the Nature of America<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So, do you think we are doing enough to keep our oceans viable and to prevent environmental disaster?&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Another interesting site is the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oceansatlas.org\/\">United Nations Atlas of the Oceans<\/a>, which provides lots of information about oceans and the issues related to them.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/oceansbook.jpg\" alt=\"Oceans cover\" class=\"alignleft\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Your University Library also has material<\/strong> (books, articles, reference works) if you&#8217;d like to do research on ocean issues, such as <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.com\/books?id=PosTAAAAYAAJ&amp;source=gbs_ViewAPI&amp;pgis=1\"><em>Oceans: an illustrated reference<\/em><\/a> <font>(2nd-floor Reference Collection GC11.2 .S76 2006)<\/font>.
