Yow! Since then I&#8217;ve had a couple of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Groundhog\">woodchucks<\/a> trapped and relocated, and recently I&#8217;ve seen an <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opossum\">opposum<\/a> eating under a bird feeder. I&#8217;m not a nature-hater, but I&#8217;m much happier just watching birds, believe me.<\/p>\n<p>Do you see any critters around you? Well, <strong>you can participate in &#8220;citizen science&#8221;<\/strong> by reporting your sightings at the <a href=\"http:\/\/wnm.mapping-online.com\/wisnatmap\/home.do\">Wisconsin NatureMapping<\/a> web site, which is sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beavercreekreserve.org\/Citizen%20Science%20Center\">Beaver Creek Reserve&#8217;s Citizen Science Center<\/a>, the Ecological Inventory and Monitoring Section of the Wisconsin <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/index.asp\">DNR<\/a>, and Applied Data Consultants. You have to create an account (it&#8217;s free), even just to view the map of sightings reported by others. To report data there&#8217;s online training. Then to report a sighting or view the map, select a category (mammals, birds, reptiles, or amphibians), and then a specific critter, e.g., &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Skink\">Skink<\/a>, Common Five-lined.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/wnm.mapping-online.com\/wisnatmap\/home.do\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/winatmap.jpg\" alt=\"Wisconsin NatureMapping screen shot\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>During the night before my job interview in Whitewater, Wisconsin, I saw an enormous, mean-looking varmint outside my motel.
