What the heck does that mean?!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Peer review<\/strong> is a quality control process used by some scholarly journals to ensure that they only publish articles containing excellent scholarship. The journals&#8217; editors send each submitted article to other experts in the discipline who read it critically and decide: the article is acceptable as is, the article needs revisions, or the article is just not acceptable or appropriate for publication.<\/p>\n<p>This North Carolina State University Libraries&#8217; video explains peer review:<br \/>\n[youtube]http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=twogpmM-SfY[\/youtube]<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/peershot.jpg\" alt=\"screenshots of peer review limits in article databases\" class=\"alignright\" \/><strong>So, if you must use such articles for your research paper, how do you find them?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2666 Several article databases, including <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com\/login.asp?profile=web\">EBSCOhost<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/vnweb.hwwilsonweb.com\/hww\/jumpstart.jhtml\">WilsonWeb<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.proquest.com\/pqdauto\">ProQuest<\/a> databases, have a limit you can apply to restrict your search results to scholarly\/peer-reviewed journals (note: not <em>all<\/em> scholarly journals are peer reviewed).<\/p>\n<p>\u2666 You can look up a journal title in the <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.ulrichsweb.com\">Ulrichsweb<\/a> database to see if it is peer reviewed:<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/ulrshot.jpg\" alt=\"Ulrischsweb screenshot\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2666 Finally, there are distinguishing characteristics that you can look for to identify an article as scholarly rather than popular.
