In 1949, Heide organized a student writing club called the Wits and sponsored a student literary magazine named The Tower, a precursor to the Muse, UW-Whitewater’s current literature and arts magazine.[3]

The Wits club was known as an informal writing club, in which all students were invited to meet and discuss various literary topics, including members’ writings.[5] In the same year the club began, they published the first edition of The Tower to exhibit club members’ writings.
