How do you celebrate National Poetry Month<\/a><\/strong>? Well, read poetry! Also, on April 17th, carry a poem in your pocket. Seriously.<\/p>\n

It seems that April 17th is the first national Poem In Your Pocket Day<\/a><\/font><\/strong>. Carry a poem with you and share it with co-workers, family, and friends.<\/p>\n

Need help finding a poem? The Academy of American Poets can help…browse poems online<\/a>. Or, do a subject keyword search of the University Library catalog<\/a> for
\npoetry<\/strong>. Or, search the poems section of the Lit<\/em>FINDER<\/a> database.<\/p>\n

I’d like to share with you an excerpt from The Library Speaks<\/em><\/strong><\/font> by Elizabeth Welton Lumpkin (discovered in the Lit<\/em>FINDER database):<\/p>\n

I hold within my silent heart
\nA store of wisdom deep,
\nWhich you, by reaching out your hands,
\nMay have to use and keep.<\/p>\n

And more than this I have at heart
\nA fond and deep desire
\nTo be a help in anything
\nTo which you may aspire.<\/p>\n

I hold the best of everything
\nIn History, Science, Art,
\nAnd stand in eager willingness
\nThis knowledge to impart.<\/p>\n

Men would forget the Great of yore
\nAnd all their valiant deeds;
\nSo I will keep them on my shelf
\nFor everyone who reads.<\/p>\n

Discoveries of every age,
\nAnd tales from every land,
\nI have in language clear and plain
\nThat all may understand.<\/p>\n

Great Artists too, with brush and pen
\nIn History took their parts
\nAnd gave me pictures, poems, prose,
\nThe choicest of their arts.<\/p>\n

But if you tire of lore so deep
\nAnd would relax the mind,
\nI have the choicest fiction
\nIt is possible to find. …<\/p>\n

So come as often as you can
\nAnd spend some time with me,
\nFor you’ll grow old as I grow old,
\nAnd lifelong friends we’ll be.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
