{"id":2334,"date":"2009-05-14T07:05:01","date_gmt":"2009-05-14T12:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/?p=2334"},"modified":"2012-04-23T20:25:25","modified_gmt":"2012-04-24T01:25:25","slug":"state-dept-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/2334","title":{"rendered":"State Dept.&#8217;s <em>State<\/em> magazine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/m\/dghr\/statemag\/\"><strong><em>State<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, the U.S. State Dept.&#8217;s glossy monthly magazine, is aimed at Dept. employees at home or abroad, but it&#8217;s available online to everyone, including prospective employees wanting to know more about the Dept.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s a lot of news that&#8217;s not interesting to outsiders, like retirements and employee awards, but each issue also highlights a &#8220;<strong>Post of the Month<\/strong>&#8221; accompanied by beautiful full-color photos. For example, the 2009 issues so far have featured posts in<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/statemag.jpg\" alt=\"State April 2009 cover\" class=\"alignright\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Geneva, Switzerland (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/documents\/organization\/117709.pdf\">January<\/a>, pp.24-30),<\/li>\n<li>Adana, Turkey (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/documents\/organization\/117704.pdf\">February<\/a>, pp.26-31),<\/li>\n<li>Santiago, Chile (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/documents\/organization\/120655.pdf\">March<\/a>, pp.20-25), and<\/li>\n<li>Kolonia, Micronesia (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/documents\/organization\/121364.pdf\">April<\/a>, pp.24-29).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many issues feature an &#8220;<strong>Office of the Month<\/strong>&#8221; that shines a light on various State Dept. units.<\/p>\n<p>And then among the brief articles are unexpected gems, like &#8220;Save the tigers: Bureau helps target illegal wildlife trade&#8221; (<a href=\"http:\/\/2001-2009.state.gov\/documents\/organization\/112696.pdf\">December 2008<\/a>, pp.16-17), which both inform and entice (Did you know? Illicit trade in wildlife is valued at $10 billion+ annually and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.conservation.org\/fmg\/pages\/videoplayer.aspx?videoid=30\">Harrison Ford did PSAs for Conservation International in 2007<\/a>). Though very brief, these articles can spark one&#8217;s curiosity and motivate a search for additional information.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/gpologo.gif\" alt=\"Government Printing Office logo\" width=\"60\" height=\"58\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"small\">The University Library is a federal depository with many federal, state, local, and international documents on a variety of current and relevant issues available to you in print, microfiche, CD-ROM, and electronically.
