{"id":230,"date":"2008-03-20T07:05:20","date_gmt":"2008-03-20T13:05:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/230"},"modified":"2008-04-19T15:27:54","modified_gmt":"2008-04-19T21:27:54","slug":"march-womens-history-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/230","title":{"rendered":"March: Women&#8217;s History Month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><big><font color=\"#570000\">March is Women&#8217;s History Month<\/font>.<\/big><\/strong> If you&#8217;re interested in researching a topic related to women&#8217;s history, resources are plentiful.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/nwhm.jpg\" alt=\"National Women's History Month ribbon\" class=\"alignright\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/topics\/womenshistory\/\">Library of Congress<\/a> is providing information and resources online in celebration of women, using materials it has collected over the last 200 years. Resources include lesson plans; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/topics\/womenshistory\/photos\/\">images of notable women<\/a>; a selection of audio\/video files, photographs, memoirs of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/vets\/stories\/ex-war-womenatwar.html\">women\u2019s experiences at war<\/a> from the Veterans History Project; and more.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwhp.org\/\">National Women&#8217;s History Project<\/a> provides a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwhp.org\/whm\/history.php\">history of National Women&#8217;s History Month<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nwhm.org\/\">National Women&#8217;s History Museum<\/a> has many online exhibits, including &#8220;<font color=\"#800000\">First But Not the Last: Women Who Ran for President<\/font>.&#8221; This exhibit highlights the campaigns of 12 women who announced their intentions to run for the Presidency, out of about 35 known to have done so over the years.<\/p>\n<p>Your <strong>University Library<\/strong> has many resources about women&#8217;s history also, including reference works such as <font color=\"#800000\"><em>Encyclopedia of American women in business: from colonial times to the present<\/em><\/font>, circulating books such as <font color=\"#800000\"><em>Inventing black women: African American women poets and self-representation, 1877-2000<\/em><\/font>, and  articles and other materials in various Library databases. Do a <strong>subject keyword<\/strong> search in the <a href=\"http:\/\/wtwlib.wisconsin.edu\">Library catalog<\/a> for <strong>women history<\/strong> to see a sampling of subject topics on which materials are available, or <a href=\"http:\/\/library.uww.edu\/askwi\/askwi.html\">ask a librarian<\/a> for assistance in formulating a search to find materials on more specific topics, such as &#8220;women political candidates.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>An especially relevant database is <a href=\"http:\/\/asp6new.alexanderstreet.com\/wasm\/wasm.index.html\">Women and Social Movements in the United States 1600-2000<\/a>. This database includes documents, images, web links, a dictionary of social movements and organizations, a chronology of women&#8217;s history in the U.S., and teaching tools such as lesson plans. Learn, for example, about the <font color=\"#800000\">Guerrilla Girls<\/font> organization and their efforts to expose sexism in art and film, read excerpts from the hospital diary of <font color=\"#800000\">Mary E. Shelton<\/font> (a Civil War era nurse in Nashville), find speeches given at the <font color=\"#800000\">Congress of Women<\/font> (held as part of the the 1893 World&#8217;s Columbian Exposition in Chicago) such as &#8220;Study of Greek Art&#8221; and &#8220;Progress of Fifty Years,&#8221; or research the <font color=\"#800000\">Hull House<\/font> of Chicago (a settlement house that attracted many female residents who later became prominent and influential reformers at various levels).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/gpologo.gif\" alt=\"Government Printing Office logo\" class=\"alignright\" height=\"58\" width=\"60\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"small\">The University Library is a federal depository with many federal, state, local, and international documents on a variety of current and relevant issues available to you in print, microfiche, CD-ROM, and electronically.
