{"id":226,"date":"2008-04-17T07:05:51","date_gmt":"2008-04-17T13:05:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/226"},"modified":"2008-04-17T07:44:31","modified_gmt":"2008-04-17T13:44:31","slug":"earth-day-april-22","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/226","title":{"rendered":"Earth Day (April 22)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Every April 22nd we celebrate <font color=\"#008000\">Earth Day<\/font>. <\/strong>Information about UWW&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/earthday\/\">Earth Day conference<\/a> on April 22nd and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/leaderdev\/seal\/calendar.cfm\">other campus events<\/a> is online.<strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/earth.jpg\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"Earth image from NASA\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The federal government&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthday.gov\/index.htm\">earthday.gov<\/a> web site has suggestions for things you can do at home, at work or in the classroom. The Environmental Protection Agency provides a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epa.gov\/earthday\/history.htm\">history of Earth Day<\/a>, which was proposed by Gaylord Nelson, then U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, and first celebrated in 1970 (the same year the EPA was created). The web site includes listings of major U.S.  environmental legislation and links to articles and reports related to Earth Day history.<\/p>\n<p>Library resources are available for more information:<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/beyondearthday.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Beyond Earth Day cover\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A keyword search of the <a href=\"http:\/\/wtwlib.wisconsin.edu\/cgi-bin\/Pwebrecon.cgi?DB=local&amp;PAGE=First\">Library catalog<\/a> for <strong>&#8220;earth day&#8221;<\/strong> finds some materials that could be used with children, as well as Gaylord Nelson&#8217;s 2002 book <font color=\"#000080\"><em>Beyond Earth Day: fulfilling the promise<\/em><\/font> (3rd-floor Main Collection,  GE195 .N45 2002). Some materials are government publications, including <a href=\"http:\/\/dnr.wi.gov\/aboutdnr\/pdf\/Sonr2001.pdf\">State of Wisconsin\u2019s natural resources<\/a> (Wisconsin documents NAT 1\/2:S 73\/2001).<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/blessedunrest.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Blessed Unrest cover\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Catalog searches for other keywords find additional related materials. A search for <strong>environmentalism<\/strong>, for example, brings up the book <font color=\"#000080\"><em>Blessed unrest: how the largest movement in the world came into being and why no one saw it coming<\/em><\/font>  (3rd-floor Main Collection GE195 .H388 2007). Here&#8217;s a quote from it:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Healing the wounds of the earth and its people does not require saintliness or a political party, only gumption and persistence. It is not a liberal or conservative activity; it is a sacred act. It is a massive enterprise undertaken by ordinary citizens everywhere, not by self-appointed governments or oligarchies.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/economics.jpg\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Economics of Climate Change cover\" \/><\/p>\n<p>A keyword search for <strong>&#8220;environmental policy&#8221;<\/strong> finds titles like <font color=\"#000080\"><em>The economics of climate change: the Stern Review<\/em><\/font> (3rd-floor Main Collection  QC981.8.C5 G738 2007) and <font color=\"#000080\"><em>First along the river: a brief history of the U.S. environmental movement<\/em><\/font> (3rd-floor Main Collection, GE195 .K578 2007).<\/p>\n<p>Articles are also available through Library databases such as EBSCO<em>host<\/em>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/search.ebscohost.com\/login.asp?profile=web&amp;defaultdb=aph\">Academic Search Premier<\/a> and WilsonWeb&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/hwwilsonweb.com\">General Science Full Text<\/a>. In the latter database, for example, a search for  <strong>environmentalism<\/strong> finds  <a href=\"http:\/\/egj.lib.uidaho.edu\/index.php\/egj\/article\/view\/3141\/3098\"><font color=\"#000080\">&#8220;Where the Green is: examining the paradox of environmentally conscious consumption,&#8221;<\/font><\/a> an article in <em>Electronic Green Journal<\/em>. In both of these databases results may be limited to scholarly\/peer-reviewed articles if desired.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you can locate organizations and their websites by using the <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.galenet.com\/servlet\/AU\">Associations Unlimited<\/a> database. A search for earth day finds <a href=\"http:\/\/ww2.earthday.net\/~earthday\/\">Earth Day Network<\/a>, and many other organizations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/gpologo.gif\" class=\"alignright\" alt=\"Government Printing Office logo\" height=\"58\" width=\"60\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"small\">The University Library is a federal depository with many federal, state, local, and international documents on a variety of current and relevant issues available to you in print, microfiche, CD-ROM, and electronically.
