{"id":22325,"date":"2019-05-27T08:00:16","date_gmt":"2019-05-27T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/?p=22325"},"modified":"2019-05-24T13:11:47","modified_gmt":"2019-05-24T18:11:47","slug":"honoring-the-wwi-gold-star-men","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/22325","title":{"rendered":"Honoring the WWI Gold Star men"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the smoke cleared from the battlefields of World War I, the Whitewater Normal School came together to honor those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the cause.\u00a0 May 30, 1919, was the first Memorial Day following the signing of the armistice that had ended the war the previous November.\u00a0 Almost 50 students and faculty,\u00a0\u00a0approximately 10 percent of the student body, returned to the school to resume their studies.\u00a0 Missing from that number were seven students and alumni.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\"><strong>Honoring the fallen<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Memorial exercises were held at the school assembly on Thursday, June 5, 1919, to honor Byron Beckett, Loren Borst, Lawrence Buckley, William Graham, Oscar Hamilton, Harold Hawes, and Ernest Magoon, all students or graduates from the Normal School and Commercial High School.<\/p>\n<p>At the assembly, Chaplain Gustav Stearns from the 128th infantry gave a memorial address.\u00a0 A member of the faculty spoke about each of the fallen soldiers, &#8220;giving a brief sketch of their lives and telling something of their service&#8221; (Whitewater Register, June, 12, 1919).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Pedestal.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22337 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Pedestal-166x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"176\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Pedestal-166x300.jpg 166w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Pedestal.jpg 447w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 176px) 100vw, 176px\" \/><\/a>On June 8, 1920, a memorial to the Gold Star men was erected on the front lawn of the Normal school, flanking the entrance to Old Main along with a bust of President Salisbury. &#8220;It was a shaft of Montello granite on which is to be placed &#8220;Victory.&#8221; A bronze tablet on the face of the shaft has the names&#8221; of the soldiers (Whitewater Register, June 10, 1920).\u00a0 The dedication ceremony included a speech by A.A. Upham and an address by Chaplain Stearns.\u00a0 In 1923, a bust of President Abraham Lincoln was added to the top of the pedestal.\u00a0 The memorial now stand near the southwest corner of Hyer hall.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Gold Star Men<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22330\" style=\"width: 157px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Beckett.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22330\" class=\" wp-image-22330\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Beckett-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"147\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Beckett-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Beckett.jpg 366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 147px) 100vw, 147px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-22330\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Byron Beckett, 1918<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Byron Beckett served as the Senior class president and graduated from the Principals&#8217; Course in June 1918 before serving as a seaman second class in the Navy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22332\" style=\"width: 136px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Borst.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22332\" class=\" wp-image-22332\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Borst-168x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"126\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Borst-168x300.jpg 168w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Borst.jpg 219w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 126px) 100vw, 126px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-22332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Loren Borst, 1917<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Loren Borst, known as the &#8220;Big Mondovi Star,&#8221; helped lead the football team to the 1917 championship game.\u00a0 He left to fight for &#8220;Uncle Sam&#8221; and died at Camp Shelby, Mississippi, in November 1918 from influenza and pneumonia.<\/p>\n<p>Lawrence Buckley attended the Normal School in 1915 and went on to work for the North Western Railway. He joined the Navy in 1917 and was promoted to seaman second class during his year of service.\u00a0 In March 1918, he was granted a ten day furlough and returned to Whitewater, where he died suddenly from diphtheria.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_085941.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-22335 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_085941-202x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"146\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_085941-202x300.jpg 202w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_085941-768x1141.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_085941-689x1024.jpg 689w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_085941.jpg 1494w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 146px) 100vw, 146px\" \/><\/a>William &#8220;Billy&#8221; Graham was part of the Freshman class of 1909 at Whitewater Normal.\u00a0 He joined Company K, 128th Infantry, and served for six years, rising to the rank of Corporal.\u00a0 He died in action on August 2, 1918.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22331\" style=\"width: 159px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Hamilton.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22331\" class=\" wp-image-22331\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Hamilton-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"149\" height=\"206\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Hamilton-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/Hamilton.jpg 376w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 149px) 100vw, 149px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-22331\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Oscar Hamilton, 1918<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Oscar Hamilton, another Whitewater native, was an editor for the Royal Purple and the Minneiska before graduating from the High School Course at Whitewater Normal in 1918. He went on to serve with the U.S. Engineers in Washington, DC, where he contracted influenza and pneumonia, which claimed his life in October 1918.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_090239.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22334 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_090239-163x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"129\" height=\"238\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_090239-163x300.jpg 163w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_090239-768x1414.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_090239-556x1024.jpg 556w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2019\/05\/20190524_090239.jpg 1186w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 129px) 100vw, 129px\" \/><\/a>Harold Hawes served as the Junior class president for the Commercial High School in 1917.
