{"id":222,"date":"2008-03-13T07:05:14","date_gmt":"2008-03-13T13:05:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/222"},"modified":"2008-04-09T15:32:55","modified_gmt":"2008-04-09T21:32:55","slug":"nih-funded-research-mandatory-public-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/222","title":{"rendered":"NIH-funded research &#038; mandatory public access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The National Institutes of Health (NIH) &#8216;s <a href=\"http:\/\/publicaccess.nih.gov\/index.htm\">public access submission policy<\/a> will be mandatory as of April 7, 2008.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The NIH Public Access Policy implements Division G, Title II,  Section 218 of PL 110-161 (Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008).  The law states:<\/p>\n<p><em>The Director of the National Institutes of Health shall require that all investigators funded by the NIH submit or have submitted for them to the National Library of Medicine&#8217;s PubMed Central an electronic version of their final, peer-reviewed manuscripts upon acceptance for publication, to be made publicly available no later than 12 months after the official date of publication: <\/em>Provided<em>, <\/em><em>That the NIH shall implement the public access policy in a manner consistent with copyright law.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Investigators whose research is funded by NIH in whole or in part must submit their final, peer-reviewed journal articles to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov\/\">PubMed Central<\/a>, a free, online archive of full-text biomedical and life sciences journal articles.
