{"id":17693,"date":"2016-03-25T10:05:45","date_gmt":"2016-03-25T15:05:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/?p=17693"},"modified":"2016-03-29T08:39:47","modified_gmt":"2016-03-29T13:39:47","slug":"friday-fun-national-jukebox","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/17693","title":{"rendered":"Friday Fun: National Jukebox"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Have some fun this weekend with this &#8220;oldie&#8221; online resource, in existence since 2011: <\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/jukebox\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>National Jukebox<\/strong><\/a> is a project of the Library of Congress that streams historical commercial sound recordings. It includes \u201cmore than 10,000 78rpm disc sides issued by the Victor Talking Machine Company between 1900 and 1925,\u201d plus more content is added periodically. It has a \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/jukebox\/recordings\/daybyday\" target=\"_blank\">Day by Day<\/a>\u201d feature, and it\u2019s searchable or browsable by performer, song, composer, genre, etc. Or take advantage of the featured content on the Jukebox&#8217;s home page.<\/p>\n<p>Last November I toured the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanfilippofoundation.org\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Sanfilippo Estate&#8217;s &#8220;Place de la Musique&#8221;<\/a> and enjoyed looking at many, many music machines&#8211;a variety of American and European <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orchestrion\" target=\"_blank\">orchestrions<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Music_box\" target=\"_blank\">music boxes<\/a> playing metal disks, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fairground_organ\" target=\"_blank\">fairground organs<\/a>, and vintage phonographs (<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victor_Talking_Machine_Company#Victrola_and_other_products\" target=\"_blank\">Victrolas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phonograph\" target=\"_blank\">Edison<\/a> players, and more)&#8211;which I was reminded of because the Jukebox includes images of some of the discs. Read about &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.aes.org\/aeshc\/docs\/recording.technology.history\/notes.html\" target=\"_blank\">Recording technology history<\/a>&#8221; from the Audio Engineering Society&#8217;s web site.<\/p>\n<p>We listened to an original recording of Caruso played on one of the phonographs at the Estate, so I looked up Caruso in the National Jukebox. Fantastic! Listen, for example, to him singing <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/jukebox\/recordings\/detail\/id\/378\" target=\"_blank\">Vesti la giubba<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.oxfordmusiconline.com\/subscriber\/article_citations\/grove\/music\/O903808?q=pagliacci&#038;search=quick&#038;pos=1&#038;_start=1\" target=\"_blank\">Pagliacci<\/a> in 1904.<\/p>\n<p>Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/jukebox\/recordings\/detail\/id\/378\" target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/vesti_la_giubba.jpg\" alt=\"screen shot from National Jukebox\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">Andersen Library is a federal and Wisconsin depository library with federal and state government documents on a variety of current and relevant issues available to you in various formats (print, DVD\/CD-ROM, online).
