Billington<\/a> has announced that in the fall, <strong>Juan Felipe Herrera will serve as the 21st <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/about_laureate.html\" target=\"_blank\">Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry<\/a> for 2015-2016<\/strong>. He will be the first Hispanic poet to serve. Read more about him in the Library of Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loc.gov\/today\/pr\/2015\/15-096.html\" target=\"_blank\">press release<\/a> about his appointment. There&#8217;s also a brief <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/bio\/juan-felipe-herrera#poet\" target=\"_blank\">biography<\/a>, along with some selected poems, at the Poetry Foundation&#8217;s web site.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/halfworld.jpg\" alt=\"cover of half World book\" class=\"alignright\" \/>The Poet Laureate works &#8220;to raise the national consciousness to a greater appreciation of the reading and writing of poetry.&#8221; For example, a former Poet Laureate created <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loc.gov\/poetry\/180\/004.html\" target=\"_blank\">Poetry 180<\/a>, a project to make a daily poem reading available, aimed at high school students.<\/p>\n<p>But you can start by reading work by Juan Felipe Herrera! <strong>Andersen Library has materials<\/strong> by him, which you can find by searching in <a href=\"http:\/\/uwi-primoalma-prod.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/primo_library\/libweb\/action\/dlSearch.do?vid=WW&#038;institution=WW&#038;search_scope=WW_VOY\" target=\"_blank\">Research@UWW<\/a>, <em>e.g.<\/em>, <em>Exiles of desire<\/em> (3rd-floor Main Collection, PS3558 .E74 E9 1985), <em>Half of the world in light: New and selected poems<\/em> (3rd-floor Main Collection, PS3558.E74 H36 2008), and <em>Laughing out loud, I fly: Poems in English and Spanish<\/em> (2nd-floor Curriculum Collection, Nonfiction, 811.54 Her).
