Douglas Hofstadter<\/a>, Distinguished Professor of Cognitive Science at Indiana University in Bloomington, will talk about “G\u00f6del, Escher, Bach: 36 years later<\/strong><\/a>” at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 19<\/strong>, in the UC’s Summers Auditorium. He’ll discuss his perception of how things have gone since his book G\u00f6del, Escher, Bach: An eternal golden braid<\/em> was published in 1979 and won the 1980 Pulitzer Prize<\/a> for non-fiction and a 1980 National Book Award<\/a> for science. Hofstadter is credited with discovering the first fractal ever found in physics, Hofstadter’s butterfly<\/a>. His work and thoughts show the connections between many fields, including art, music and mathematics.<\/p>\n

Andersen Library has a copy of G\u00f6del, Escher, Bach: An eternal golden braid<\/em><\/a> in the 3rd-floor Main Collection at QA9.8 .H63 1999, and UWW students and staff may borrow additional copies of this title, or the author’s book I am a strange loop<\/em><\/a>, from other UW campus libraries by using the free Universal Borrowing<\/a> service.<\/p>\n
