This is UWW\u2019s 29th annual Martin Luther King Commemorative Event, and it&#8217;s also part of the campus <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/diversity\/conversation-on-race\" title=\"Conversation on Race\" target=\"_blank\">Conversation on Race<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Voting Rights Act was enacted fifty years ago, signed by President Lyndon Baines Johnson on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/this-day-in-history\/johnson-signs-voting-rights-act\" title=\"Johnson signs Voting Rights Act at The History Channel's This Day in History\" target=\"_blank\">August 6, 1965<\/a>. You also can read online President Johnson&#8217;s speech at a televised joint session of the Congress on March 15, 1965 called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.lbjlib.utexas.edu\/johnson\/archives.hom\/speeches.hom\/650315.asp\" title=\"President Lyndon B. Johnson's Special Message to the Congress: The American Promise\" target=\"_blank\">The American Promise<\/a>,&#8221; delivered in the week following the violent &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/memory.loc.gov\/ammem\/today\/mar07.html\" title=\"Today in History: March 7 at American Memory, Library of Congress\" target=\"_blank\">Bloody Sunday<\/a>&#8221; attack on civil rights marchers that also had been televised to the American public. Included in the speech are these lines:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\nThere is no constitutional issue here. The command of the Constitution is plain.<\/p>\n<p>There is no moral issue. It is wrong&#8211;deadly wrong&#8211;to deny any of your fellow Americans the right to vote in this country.<\/p>\n<p>There is no issue of States rights or national rights.
