{"id":14178,"date":"2014-05-09T20:55:11","date_gmt":"2014-05-10T01:55:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/?p=14178"},"modified":"2015-02-04T10:49:10","modified_gmt":"2015-02-04T16:49:10","slug":"in-memoriam-farley-mowat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/14178","title":{"rendered":"In Memoriam: Farley Mowat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/images\/library\/blog\/farley_mowat.jpg\" alt=\"Farley Mowat\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In my email this morning was a message with the ominous-sounding subject line, &#8220;In celebration of Farley Mowat.&#8221; Since Farley Mowat is one of my favorite writers and someone I hoped to meet some day, I didn&#8217;t like the sound of it. Farley Mowat is one of Canada&#8217;s best-loved and sometimes most controversial authors. And on May 7, he died in Port Hope, Ontario just a few days before his 93rd birthday.<\/p>\n<p>The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/arts\/books-and-media\/acclaimed-canadian-author-farley-mowat-dead-at-92\/article18511064\/?page=all\" alt=\"Farley Mowat obituary\"><em>Globe and Mail<\/em><\/a> obituary has a detailed account of Mowat&#8217;s life and work and will help readers understand the impact he&#8217;s had on the Canadian government and its policies on native peoples and the environment. The <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/05\/08\/world\/americas\/farley-mowat-canadian-writer-and-wildlife-advocate-dies-at-92.html?_r=0\" alt=\"New York Times obituary\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a> obituary is more concise, but nicely sums up Farley Mowat&#8217;s contributions to literature and society. <\/p>\n<p>Farley Mowat is probably best known for two books. The first is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/uw-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com\/primo_library\/libweb\/action\/dlSearch.do?query=any,contains,(OCoLC)ocm48027680&#038;vid=WW&#038;institution=WW&#038;search_scope=UW_ALMA\" alt=\"never cry wolf\"><em>Never Cry Wolf<\/em><\/a>, where he embellishes on the study he conducted in the late 1940s when the Canadian government sent him to investigate the decline of the caribou population.
