{"id":14041,"date":"2014-04-25T07:05:33","date_gmt":"2014-04-25T12:05:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/?p=14041"},"modified":"2014-04-23T17:55:09","modified_gmt":"2014-04-23T22:55:09","slug":"lineage-societies-are-you-eligible","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/archives\/14041","title":{"rendered":"Lineage Societies \u2013 Are You Eligible??"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Did an ancestor run a tavern before the American Revolution?\u00a0 You qualify for <a title=\"Flagon and Trencher web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.flagonandtrencher.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Flagon and Trencher Society<\/a>, a group established in 1962 for the descendants of tavern, inn and pub owners working in America before 1776.<\/p>\n<p>Did a grandparent fight in World War II?\u00a0 You qualify for one of the newest lineage societies, <a href=\"https:\/\/suite.io\/katharine-garstka\/4syp228\" title=\"The Sons and Daughters of World War II Veterans web site\" target=\"_blank\">The Sons and Daughters of World War II Veterans<\/a>, established 2011.<\/p>\n<p>Have a Salem witch among your ancestors?\u00a0 Learn more about the <a title=\"Associated Daughters of Early American Witches web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.adeaw.us\/\" target=\"_blank\">Associated Daughters of Early American Witches<\/a> (membership by invitation only).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.genealogyandfamilyhistory.com\/?p=279\" title=\"lineage societies defined\" target=\"_blank\">Lineage societies<\/a> are groups of people organized around a genealogical heritage they have in common.\u00a0 The heritage may be as common as being of Scottish ancestry \u2013 many cities have St. Andrew\u2019s Societies, including <a title=\"Saint Andrew's Society of the City of Milwaukee web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.standrewssocietymilwaukee.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Milwaukee<\/a>.\u00a0 It may be as esoteric as the <a title=\"Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ahac.us.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company of Massachusetts<\/a>, established in 1638 (oldest in North America) and still going strong.\u00a0 Societies number in the hundreds, see <a title=\"Cyndi's List - Societies &amp; Groups - Lineage Societies web site\" href=\"http:\/\/cyndislist.com\/societies\/lineage\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cyndi&#8217;s List &#8211; Societies &amp; Groups &#8211; Lineage Societies<\/a> for lists.\u00a0 All societies limit membership to those who meet the heritage criteria established for the group.\u00a0 Many organizations also limit membership by gender and may require an invitation to join from current members.\u00a0 Prospective members will be asked to supply genealogical proof of the heritage requirement.\u00a0 Most maintain libraries of genealogical research on the families of their members and the history of their topic of interest.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the better known societies include the <a title=\"Daughters of the American Revolution web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.dar.org\/default.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Daughters of the American Revolution<\/a>, the <a title=\"Mayflower Society web site\" href=\"https:\/\/www.themayflowersociety.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">General Society of Mayflower Descendants <\/a> (commonly called the Mayflower Society), the <a title=\"United Daughters of the Confederacy web site\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hqudc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">United Daughters of the Confederacy<\/a>, and the <a title=\"Royal Bastards web site\" href=\"http:\/\/royalbastards.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Descendants of the Illegitimate Sons and Daughters of the Kings of Britain<\/a> (aka &#8220;The Royal Bastards&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p>For more information on joining lineage societies, see the staff in <a href=\"https:\/\/library.uww.edu\/special-collections\/contact#contact\" title=\"Special Collections contact information\" target=\"_blank\">Special Collections<\/a>, 1230 Andersen Library.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Did an ancestor run a tavern before the American Revolution?\u00a0 You qualify for The Flagon and Trencher Society, a group established in 1962 for the descendants of tavern, inn and pub owners working in America before 1776.
