Teens Do Not Function Well Before 8:00 A.M."},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Really?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite not having been a crack-of-noon riser as a teenager, even<i> I<\/i> could have told the radio journalist that. (And, in an admittedly sassy moment, I let her know my mind; but who was to hear except for my carpool companions?) To be fair, the journalist, Allison Aubrey, was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/health\/2013\/12\/02\/247314202\/parents-of-sleep-deprived-teens-push-for-later-school-start-times\" target=\"_blank\">reporting on a national petition<\/a> started by a grassroots organization to promote legislation that would prevent public schools from starting before 8 a.m. In the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/blogs\/health\/2013\/12\/02\/247314202\/parents-of-sleep-deprived-teens-push-for-later-school-start-times\" target=\"_blank\">NPR news story<\/a>, she mentioned a number of polls and a single <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/?term=Time+for+bed+Short+MA\" target=\"_blank\">study<\/a> carried out by an interviewee, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.childrensnational.org\/findadoctor\/profiles\/judith-owens-4427.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Judith Owens<\/a>, who directs the Sleep Medicine Clinic at Children&#8217;s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As seasoned researchers know, and as undergraduates are beginning to appreciate, what appears to be \u201ccommon knowledge\u201d is often fine fodder for a literature review or research project. Is there actually enough evidence at this point to support such a petition?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Assignments often specify a requirement of a certain number of scholarly research articles, making it easy to bypass<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/12\/Ency-of-Adolesc.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-13153\" alt=\"Ency-of-Adolesc\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/library\/files\/2013\/12\/Ency-of-Adolesc.jpg\" width=\"117\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> or simply overlook excellent resources such as this December\u2019s feature, the online version of the <a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/referenceworks\/9780123739513\" target=\"_blank\">Encyclopedia of Adolescence<\/a>, published by Elsevier\u2019s Academic Press. Subject-specific encyclopedias like this one often provide an excellent springboard to the background of research in a field. A simple search for the term \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science?_ob=ArticleListURL&amp;_method=list&amp;_ArticleListID=-457940727&amp;_sort=r&amp;_st=13&amp;view=c&amp;_acct=C000058105&amp;_version=1&amp;_urlVersion=0&amp;_userid=2614375&amp;md5=003c557ffcb825be22ffe63dfdbdc46e&amp;searchtype=a\" target=\"_blank\">sleep<\/a>\u201d results in 24 articles from the encyclopedia, ranging from \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780123739513000399\/pdfft?md5=87ed55137c2ec5967ada9d950c9f6c4b&amp;pid=3-s2.0-B9780123739513000399-main.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Adolescent Sleep<\/a>\u201d, to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780123739513001356\" target=\"_blank\">Sleep Patterns and Challenges<\/a>,\u201d to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/libproxy.uww.edu:9443\/login?url=http:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/B9780123739513000120\" target=\"_blank\">Adolescent Driving Behavior: A Developmental Challenge<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to outlining key concepts and the direction of research, each article provides references to additional scholarly work as well as relevant, authoritative websites.
