{"id":175,"date":"2009-05-06T12:58:52","date_gmt":"2009-05-06T18:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/lgbtforce\/?p=175"},"modified":"2009-05-08T08:45:59","modified_gmt":"2009-05-08T14:45:59","slug":"the-maine-event-gay-marriage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/lgbtcommittee\/?p=175","title":{"rendered":"The Main(e) Event &#8211; Gay Marriage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Now there are <strong>FIVE<\/strong> states that recognize same-sex marriages &#8211; the Maine Legislature passed the bill this morning and <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/d3rfu7\">their governor signed it into law<\/a> an hour after it reached his desk. This is now the second state to legalize marriage for all via the legislative vote.<\/p>\n<p>In other marriage news, the Washington Post reported that the District of Columbia City Council <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/cfdyw6\">voted in favor of recognizing same-sex marriages performed elsewhere<\/a>. This presents an interesting situation, as Congress will have thirty days to review district legislation, which hasn&#8217;t the same-sex marriage issue since the <a href=\"http:\/\/tinyurl.com\/c9vgrx\">1996 Defense of Marriage Act<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Interesting side note &#8211; Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) was quoted as saying, &#8220;It&#8217;s not something I can let go softly into the night&#8230; I recognize the Democrats are in the majority, but I represent the majority of Americans on this issue.&#8221; No offense, Rep.
