My Digital Self

I am not a very big news person, at least when talking about the traditional form of news. I don’t sit down to watch the nightly news, and I don’t go out of my way to read about the latest political drama, such as what Trump said this week or what is happening in Congress. Honestly, it just doesn’t capture my interest. Instead, my news consumption is much more personalized and casual. I usually get suggested news from things my phone recognizes I might want to hear about, based on what I search for or the topics I follow on Google. Sometimes I’ll get local news stories recommended to me, and depending on what they are about, I might be interested enough to click and read.

For the most part, I get my news through Google’s recommended articles. Rarely do I search for news on my own unless I am looking for something specific. Occasionally, I’ll use AI overview for quick answers or summaries, but even then, it’s more for specific searches than for keeping up with the daily news cycle. What I do follow more consistently is sports-related news. I regularly check updates on the Milwaukee Brewers and the Green Bay Packers. Sports news is different for me because it directly ties into my personal interests, whether it’s learning about a new trade, an injury update, or simply game highlights. When it comes to how I consume news, I mostly rely on text articles or short videos. Photos are part of the experience, but I rarely come across news stories that only rely on pictures. Video highlights, especially for sports, are one of the quickest ways for me to stay up to date without having to read a long article. I would definitely describe myself as just a news consumer rather than an active participant in news culture. I’ve never left a comment on a news article, never emailed a reporter, and never submitted potential content to a news site. I am more of a passive observer.

Sometimes I get news from social media platforms like Facebook or Instagram, but I am cautious about believing what I see there. Because it’s so easy to post false or misleading information on social media, I usually fact check anything that grabs my attention by looking it up on more reliable sites. I do have an account on X, but I don’t use it as a source of news. Instead, I follow YouTubers and content creators I enjoy, and I use the platform more for entertainment than staying informed. I don’t read blogs, but I do listen to podcasts regularly, especially while driving. One of my favorites is “Locked on Brewers,” which keeps me updated on daily Brewers news and analysis. I also listen to “Simmian Jimmy’s Treehouse,” hosted by one of my favorite YouTubers, where the conversations are less about news and more about life, movies, and discussions with other creators. Podcasts give me a different way to consume information, less formal, more conversational, and something I can enjoy passively while doing other tasks.
