{"id":20,"date":"2015-10-20T14:30:22","date_gmt":"2015-10-20T14:30:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/kimberlywethal\/?p=20"},"modified":"2015-10-20T14:30:22","modified_gmt":"2015-10-20T14:30:22","slug":"haunted-mansion-gives-students-a-scare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/kimberlywethal\/2015\/10\/20\/haunted-mansion-gives-students-a-scare\/","title":{"rendered":"Haunted Mansion gives students a scare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Career and Leadership Development holds first-ever event<\/p>\n<p>By Kimberly Wethal<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Haley Tyrrell decided to attend the Haunted Mansion last Saturday night in the University Center, she was expecting a predictable college haunted house, one that wasn\u2019t really all that scary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She got the exact opposite instead.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was terrifying, actually,\u201d Tyrrell said. \u201cWith these [haunted mansion actors], you don\u2019t even know when they\u2019re going to come out. There were ones that were hiding behind the walls that would just pound right into you, and when they screamed in your ear, they made you scream yourself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Haunted Mansion, a first-year event, was hosted by Career and Leadership Development (CLD) and was started to be \u201cfun and different for Halloween,\u201d said junior Jessica Faust, one of the event\u2019s organizers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/kimberlywethal\/files\/2015\/10\/IMG_5923.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/kimberlywethal\/files\/2015\/10\/IMG_5923-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"A Second Salem Paranormal Investigation Team member lurks in the hallways of the haunted mansion.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-21\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A Second Salem Paranormal Investigation Team member lurks in the hallways of the haunted mansion. Photo by Kimberly Wethal.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first hour of the four-hour event was PG, but the rest of the time, scarers were allowed to jump out at those in attendance. The idea behind having a PG version at the start of the event was so students could bring younger family members to let them have fun as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faust said that anyone in attendance should have prepared to be frightened, seeing that she went through it before anyone else was in there and was terrified.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey\u2019re going to be scared,\u201d Faust said at the beginning of the event. \u201cFor the PG [version], there\u2019s no touching [of patrons by scarers] but there\u2019s still some things hanging down, so it\u2019s pretty scary.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The setup of the haunted mansion was done by an outside entertainment company called Simplified Entertainment, which brings the haunted mansion to a location and only requires an event to have a minimum of ten of their own scarers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/kimberlywethal\/files\/2015\/10\/IMG_5950.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22\" class=\"wp-image-22 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/kimberlywethal\/files\/2015\/10\/IMG_5950-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5950\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-22\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Props such as demonic baby dolls could be just as terrifying as the human scarers. Photo by Kimberly Wethal.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Second Salem Paranormal Investigation Team (SSPIT), formerly known as the Second Salem Spooks, assisted with the Haunted Mansion as the scarers inside the event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For SSPIT team members, being on the other side of the scare for once gave them a different perspective than usual.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe get scared sometimes, so I think it\u2019s cool to in turn scare people,\u201d said Libby Huggett, SSPIT member. \u201cI think that\u2019s really exciting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The structure of the haunted mansion itself consisted of a plastic tent-like structure, with walls inside that allowed those looking for a scare to weave their way through narrow corridors from room to room, where members of the SSPIT were waiting in costume.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s cool, since I\u2019ve never seen a travelling haunted house before,\u201d Huggett said. \u201cIt was cool to see how effective it was.
