Henry Jenkins believes that we’re witnessing an ultimate shift where stories unfold across multiple media platforms at the same time. He emphasizes how both corporate decisions and mass creativity drive this change, with audiences becoming active participants rather than passive consumers. In the first video, he shows how the Obama campaign productively leveraged participatory culture. This allowed supporters to create and share content organically.
To add on to Jenkins’ claims, Eefje op den Buysch explores transmedia’s future through hyper-personalization, which can be seen in the last video. She studies how Game of Thrones illustrates successful transmedia engagement, creating devoted fan communities that spread stories beyond their original platforms. Op den Buysch sees a future where AI and biometric data allow stories to adapt in real-time to individual users’ emotional states and preferences. While admitting privacy concerns, she suggests this could create unique and personalized entertainment experiences.
Both of their perspectives revealed to me how technology continues to redefine the fundamental relationship between storytellers and their audiences.
