Ever since the 2016 revival of William Finn and James Lapine’s 1992 musical Falsettos, fans everywhere have been eagerly waiting for the much-anticipated 2019 Falsettos national tour.
The 2016 revival of Falsettos was nominated for five Tony awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, and tells the story of a tight-knit family turned upside down as Marvin, the husband and father of the family, leaves his wife, Trina, and his son, Jason, to pursue a relationship with a man, Whizzer. Taking place in the late 70’s and early 80’s, the family must adjust to their new lives as they learn the importance of family in this hilarious, witty, and heart-wrenching musical.
The cast features Max Von Essen (Marvin), Nick Adams (Whizzer), Eden Espinosa (Trina), Nick Blaemire (Mendel), Audrey Cardwell (Cordelia), Bryonha Marie Parham (Dr. Charlotte), and Thatcher Jacobs and Jim Kaplan (Jason). Hitting the road in early February 2019, the national touring cast will be playing in Fayetteville, Arkansas; Dallas, Texas; St. Paul, Minnesota; Sacramento, California; San Francisco, California; Los Angeles, California; Chicago, Illinois; Washington, D.C.; and Charlotte, North Carolina.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Andrew Rannells, who played Whizzer in the 2016 revival of Falsettos, said “I just had never heard a musical that had sounded like that before. It has an oddly contemporary sound and also just very unique, which I now know is [William] Finn, it’s his sort of genius and very specific brand and style of writing. I had never heard anything like it.”
Emily Leong, a junior at the University of Wisconsin Whitewater, is seeing Falsettos when it comes to Chicago in early June. She said “I’m excited to see Falsettos because it is one of my favorite musicals. It means the perseverance of love among all types of relationships.”
