{"id":20,"date":"2017-10-04T21:07:15","date_gmt":"2017-10-04T21:07:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/j347johnmiller\/?p=20"},"modified":"2017-10-04T21:09:39","modified_gmt":"2017-10-04T21:09:39","slug":"cross-country-teams-finish-middle-of-pack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/j347johnmiller\/2017\/10\/04\/cross-country-teams-finish-middle-of-pack\/","title":{"rendered":"Cross country teams finish middle of pack"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"graph1\">After the UW-Whitewater men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross country teams both started the season off with top-two finishes, the men placed sixth and the women finished ninth at the Blugold Invitational Sept. 29 in Colfax, Wisconsin.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph2\">The men\u2019s team tallied a total time of 2:11:05 in 13-team, eight-kilometer race, 32 seconds off the pace of fifth-place St. Olaf.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph3\">\u201cIt was good [the men\u2019s placement] because we have a couple guys injured right now,\u201d head coach Jeff Miller said. \u201cWithout them we figured, we\u2019ll see what the young guys can do and they did well. We did very well for where we\u2019re at in the season and our training.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph4\">The women finished with a total time of 2:01:26 in the 15-team, six-kilometer race, right behind conference foes UW-Stout, UW-Oshkosh and UW-Platteville.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/j347johnmiller\/files\/2017\/10\/cross-country.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/j347johnmiller\/files\/2017\/10\/cross-country-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/j347johnmiller\/files\/2017\/10\/cross-country-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/j347johnmiller\/files\/2017\/10\/cross-country.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"graph5\">\u201cThe women ran a lot of personal records, they just had really nice races,\u201d Miller said. \u201cFrom a standpoint of how we\u2019re progressing with our training, we had positive results from the meet. In the team play standpoint, we were probably a little under what we\u2019d like to achieve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph6\">For the men, it was senior\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uwwsports.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=12503&amp;path=mcross\">Brett Harms<\/a> that led the way with a time of 25:14.6, good for sixth place out of 257 runners.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph7\">Harms, a 2016 All-American, now has a first place and sixth place finish under his belt to start the season, but said he can improve even more.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph8\">\u201cI\u2019m building on last year\u2019s success,\u201d Harms said. \u201cI was happy with last year, but I also want to do a lot better than last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph9\">Freshman David Fassbender came in second for the Warhawks and finished 38th\u00a0overall with a time of 26:13.7.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph10\">Senior Alec Meixelsperger clocked in at 26:23.5 for a 44th\u00a0place finish, with freshman Kyle Neuroth right behind at 26:24.6 at the 45th\u00a0spot.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph11\">On the women\u2019s side, it was junior\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/uwwsports.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=12527&amp;path=wcross\">Liz Mielke<\/a> with the top time and personal record for the Warhawks at 23:40.4, good for the 54th\u00a0placement.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph12\">Mielke, who finished second for UW-W in the team\u2019s first meet of the year, contributed her early success to her team and coaches.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph13\">\u201cWe just have a lot of good momentum on our team right now,\u201d Mielke said. \u201cIt\u2019s really nice to come to practice and know you\u2019ll get a good workout in with people who are all on the same page.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph14\">Other Warhawk runners to crack the top 100 finishers on the women\u2019s side were freshman Jessie Braun (23:54.9) at 63, junior Manda Slaback (24:26.4) at 82 and sophomore Sydney Prestifilippo (24:34.0) at 93.<\/p>\n<p id=\"graph15\">The Warhawks will have a week off before both teams head to the Cowbell Classic, a meet that Miller noted as one of the most important of the year, on Oct. 14 in Elsah, Illinois.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After the UW-Whitewater men\u2019s and women\u2019s cross country teams both started the season off with top-two finishes, the men placed sixth and the women finished ninth at the Blugold Invitational Sept. 29 in Colfax, Wisconsin.
