On the national and international levels, I am interested in news that mainly relates to environmental issues, and some political issues as well. I tend to find sources that introduce positive news, as there are a lot of stressful events happening in the world. I am privileged enough to decide what news I give my attention to, and that is something that I acknowledge. There is not one specific place that I get my news from. On the state level, there is not much I pay attention to unless I am casually watching television. On a local level, I follow police departments on Facebook about my county. There are not many stories I keep up to date with, besides legal paperwork of people I know. I follow news from Facebook from my hometown. I don’t go out of my way to visit news sources. I do not have a favorite news source. Sites that appeal to me are generally on social media, but I don’t follow any directly. If something pops up that I am interested in, I will take the time to search it in a search engine, typically Google.
I have never used AI and never will, as an artist, it goes against my ethical ideals. Creation should be left up to humans! I would prefer it if journalists wrote the news, and AI could learn how to do laundry and dishes instead. I find myself most commonly looking at news videos, rather than slideshows or audio reports. I do not interact with any interactive graphics because I never seek them out. I have never submitted content to a news site, but I have been featured in the news on occasion through interviews. As a staff member of UWW-TV, I am frequently creating video packages on events, which play on the TV station, although they tend to be softer news stories. Social media occasionally leads me to news, but mostly Facebook as it is the only social media I use in a serious manner. My friends show stories to me that show up in their search engines. Most of the time, however, these sources may have inaccurate information, and may be created for the purpose of gaining views, and for shock.
I use X on occasion, but rarely for news and mostly for entertainment. With X and Meta becoming more censored, it is not a place I would rely on to get my news from. I do not use Bluesky, but after some research, I may have to consider it! I consume news from the same few sources that I believe are reliable. There are not many stories I have believed to be illegitimate, because I don’t consume too much news. A while ago, an AI-generated Image of the Hollywood sign on fire was going around on social media. With extra letters, I knew it was obviously fake, but people online were easily convinced by it. This is just one of the many examples of how it is difficult to navigate news today, when there are so many sources that are incorrect or purposely biased for the intention of going viral. Local news stations and local backpack journalists primarily make up my knowledge of news.
