Nervousness and excitement filled the air in the Hamilton Room, in the University Center, as hundreds students searched for possible career opportunities.  This past week the University of Wisconsin Whitewater held its annual Spring Career Fair.  The fair, put on be the Career and Leadership Center, took place from 1pm to 5pm and gives students to talk to companies about possible internships and jobs.  Students dress in their finest clothes move from booth to booth handing out resumes in hopes of impressing companies.

Although it may be nerve wracking for students, many companies enjoy coming to Whitewater to find talented young individuals to fill positions at their companies.  A human resource representative for Delta Defense, a self-defense company, said she liked coming to Whitewater because to the students always seem eager to talk to companies and seem calm and collected. She stated that, “I have never seen more professional looking students who are so intelligent. It would be my pleasure to employee UW-Whitewater students as interns and full time employees.” She encourages students to check out their website if interested in career opportunities. Many other companies encourage students to do the same.

Not only do companies see the advantage the career fair brings, students do as well. Many believes it gives them a leg up on their possible competition by talking to company representatives face to face.  Erica Koller, a marketing major, said,” Although the career makes me nervous, it is important that I go because I feel like companies will remember me better during the application process if they meet me face to face.  For instance, Delta Defense remember me from the fall fair and I like I have a good shot at an internship there.”  The career fairs that UW-Whitewater gives students a chance to possibly get a life-long career and shows that the university cares about the futures of their students.

As stated before going to a career fair can be scary for students.  Luckily for students the university has many resources on campus that can help prepare students for meeting with future employers. On of these is the Career and Leadership Development Center. The center helps students prepare for interviews. Also, students can check out the Career Spotlight blog.  The blog post many different stories that offer student tips on what they should do before, during, and after the career fair. Overall the 2017 Career Fair had a great turnout.

My Digital Self

In today’s world, many people, myself included, receive their news via the internet. Whether it is through social media, the news source’s website, or a smartphone app people are in some way getting news digitally. For me I have never lived in the world where the internet did not exist and barely remember a time where cellphones did not, so as a teenager and young adult I rarely ever watch the news on TV to get information.

For national and international news, I follow what is happening politically, especially since Donald Trump is now president.  I mostly get national news from the CNN app I have on my phone.  This app is a combination of text and videos and sends notifications to my phone when news stories break. I do follow news form my home town, which is Madison Wisconsin. I mostly find local news from Facebook. Friends and family share links to local news stories.  The links generally lead me to local news station’s website like Channel 3000. Facebook one hundred leads me to news.  Most of the time it is through links or one specific story. I can be hard to trust which is real on Facebook.  I normally trust the news credible if it is posted by the news source itself or my mom or dad’s friends share it because the older and seem more knowledgeable regarding fake news. I also use twitter but I am never really led to news sites like I do on Facebook.

When I do not get my news from social media I will sometimes type in the web address to the NYC Times or CNN. A big reason I am attracted to these websites is because of their designs. The both have very sleek web designs that are easy to navigate. The news is easy to find and I typically do not get distracted by ads and other online distractors when I use these news sites. The only time I ever really use search engines like Google to find news is when I see multiple people share a news story on social media and I want to see if it is true or if big media sites have posted something about it. This is one of the steps I take to make sure news is real. I have been on Facebook multiple times and read though a story that turned out to be fake. One of the steps I take now is to note the source of where this news is coming from. If it is a website I have never heard of I won’t look at it because it has a higher possibility of being fake.

I enjoy news of any kind but my two favorite formats are probably video and interactive graphics. I enjoy these formats because they do not bore me.  Typically, with text I get distracted and go on my phone or exit out of the news story. All in all, I do enjoy receiving news digitally I just have to take the precautions to ensure it is real.

Facebook Trying to Save Endangered Langauges

Can Facebook really help save endangered languages? Well that seems to be there plan according this article, http://money.cnn.com/2016/09/29/technology/facebook-endangered-languages.  I all started when people trying to save the Corsican language spent three weeks trying to find words similar to english words like poke, friend, and like to use on Facebook.  This process is part of a two year campagin that invovled bringing symbols and words in Corsican to Facebook.  On Thurday September 29, 2016 it was annouced that the Corsican language can now be officially used on Facebook.

I think this important to because Facebook theses days is a source from which many people recieve news and it is a good place to help those who speak a dying language be able to recieve news in a form which they understand.  It is also a great learning tool to help childern learn to speak a dying language and can be used to reach and communicate with many all over the world.  I can’t wait to see if Facebook continues to do this with other languages and how people react to these changes.
