{"id":61105,"date":"2018-07-06T15:53:36","date_gmt":"2018-07-06T20:53:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/instructional\/?p=61105"},"modified":"2018-07-06T15:53:36","modified_gmt":"2018-07-06T20:53:36","slug":"ted-tips-issue-1-introduction-and-hello","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/instructional\/2018\/07\/06\/ted-tips-issue-1-introduction-and-hello\/","title":{"rendered":"TED Tips \u2013 Issue 1:  Introduction and Hello!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hi all!\u00a0 Welcome to TED Tips\u2026a weekly blog brought to you by the Learning Technology Center. \u00a0\u00a0I wanted to take brief second to introduce myself, welcome you to my blog \u201cTED\u201d Tips, and invite you to interact with the Learning Technology Center and me.<\/p>\n<p>So Hi!\u00a0 My name is Ted Witt.\u00a0 My official job title at the Learning and Technology Center is \u201cTeaching Learning and Technology Consultant\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 What exactly does that mean?\u00a0 It means I am a champion for the effective use of technology.\u00a0 I do not believe we should use technology because it is the latest cool toy or fad, but to explore possibilities and its strategic implementation and effective use.\u00a0 \u00a0I do this primarily through supporting instructors through the pedagogically sound use in your teaching.\u00a0 I support faculty training programs and workshops.\u00a0 For example, this summer I am working with the Active Learning Academy and supporting the Online Blended Institute through the LTC.\u00a0 I also administer the Quality Matters standards.<\/p>\n<p>I have been an information technology teacher and have taught both on ground and online courses.\u00a0 I have a BA in History and Political Science with a minor in Philosophy; a Master of Science in Information Technology with a specialization in Business Intelligence and Knowledge Management; and a Master of Arts in Liberal Arts.<\/p>\n<p>Why am I calling this blog TED Tips?\u00a0 Yes, I am blatantly adapting the idea from TED talks but, no I am not related to them\u2026despite the similarity with my name!<\/p>\n<p>Here TED does not just stand for the author writing the blog but the main themes I hope to explore over the coming weeks:\u00a0 Technology, Education, and Design.\u00a0 What do I mean by each of those?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Technology \u2013 <\/strong>I strongly believe it is important to know our technological environment and how to use the tools we have available to us.\u00a0 What options do we have?\u00a0 How do we use them?\u00a0 These are the types of topics the blog will explore.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Education \u2013 <\/strong>with a focus on pedagogy.\u00a0 Once we know how to use the technology\u2026how do use it well.\u00a0 How do we use it to enhance our teaching and improve student success?\u00a0 This aspect of the blog will look at different approaches and uses and how we can apply those tools in the classroom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Design \u2013 <\/strong>Once we have explored technology, looked at sound approaches, how do we design the experiences and implement them thoughtfully?\u00a0 This portion of the blog will focus on \u201cHow to\u201d practical tips with an emphasis on putting those skills to use. My goal is to help you create rich meaningful learning experiences and the purpose of the blog will help provide you with tips to do that.<\/p>\n<p>The final purpose is to celebrate the good work we are doing and encourage collaboration.\u00a0 I will share success stories.\u00a0 I want to highlight some of the work going on in the Learning Technology Center and on campus as it relates to those TED themes!<\/p>\n<p>Last thoughts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I also work for Major League Baseball in their statistics department and can often be found at Miller Park.
