{"id":55995,"date":"2012-11-15T15:07:03","date_gmt":"2012-11-15T21:07:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/instructional\/?p=55995"},"modified":"2012-11-15T15:16:26","modified_gmt":"2012-11-15T21:16:26","slug":"streaming-video-support-for-ios","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/instructional\/2012\/11\/15\/streaming-video-support-for-ios\/","title":{"rendered":"Streaming Video Support for iOS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-56033\" title=\"ios-logo-vector-01\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/instructional\/files\/2012\/11\/ios-logo-vector-01.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/instructional\/files\/2012\/11\/ios-logo-vector-01.png 200w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/instructional\/files\/2012\/11\/ios-logo-vector-01-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/>Over the past years, the Learning Technology Center (LTC) has streamed and produced a large amount of video for courses.\u00a0 We have relied on the Adobe Flash technology to playback the videos that have been produced in Desire2Learn and other various websites<strong>.\u00a0 Effective immediately, the underlying code that powers these pages now supports playback on iOS devices!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What does this mean?<\/strong>\u00a0 It means that all videos produced or processed by the LTC in the last 2 &#8211; 3 years can be viewed on iPhones, iPods and iPads.\u00a0 The videos continue to work as they always have on computers and other devices supporting Adobe Flash.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do I have to do anything?<\/strong>\u00a0 No!\u00a0 We have designed it in such a way that the change was retroactive to all of the video pages sent out by the LTC.\u00a0 Your videos should now work on iOS devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What if my video does not load on iOS?<\/strong>\u00a0 Please contact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/desire2learn\/contact-d2l-support\">UW-W D2L Support<\/a> and include the specific course, module and topic link where the video is located.\u00a0 If the video is in an older format we may need to convert it to a H.264 (mp4) format before it will work on iOS devices.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How does it work?<\/strong> (Warning: Technical Response)\u00a0 We have updated our underlying code that generates the flowplayer page to utilize Apple&#8217;s HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) which was implemented by Adobe in their Flash Media Server.\u00a0 Using HLS, we are able to deliver the same quality of video, at multiple bitrates for varying internet connection speeds to iOS devices.<\/p>\n<p>If you have any questions or concerns regarding this, please contact <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uww.edu\/desire2learn\/contact-d2l-support\" target=\"_blank\">UW-W D2L Support<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over the past years, the Learning Technology Center (LTC) has streamed and produced a large amount of video for courses.
