Growing up in the most haunted house in America?

Today we’re going to be introducing our “Series in Review,” section of the blog. Kicking it off, I’m going to be talking about one of my favorite Netflix shows of 2018, ‘The Haunting of Hill House.’

The Haunting of Hill House

This netflix original features a family who buys an estate known as Hill House, the most haunted house in America, in efforts to renovate it and flip it. The family consists of the dad, the mom, and their five children. The kids begin to experience their own encounter with a paranormal entity, each adding a layer of horror to the plot.

One of my favorite aspects of this show is they way it handles character development. The first few episodes focus on mainly a single character, while also driving the story line further. The story takes place in two timelines, one is in present day and the other takes place when they initially decide to purchase the house and begin renovating it. The show makers exhibited great restraint during the production of this show. They didn’t just fill the show with jumpscares, although they are there, however a lot of the horror happens in the background of the scenes.

“Netflix’s revisionist take on the legendary ghost story underlines the fact that home is where the horror is — and that’s what sets it apart”

-Rolling Stone Magazine

This is truly a story of family dysfunction, love, and of course horror. The characters were very well written and each actor manages to bring their own nuances to their roles. If you’re looking for a gothic horror that will stick with you, I recommend this show. I’m giving it 4.3/5 stars.
