The media world we live in today is almost unavoidable. We are completely surrounded by it and I would say I, along with most of society, consider myself to be a very active person online. There’s so many ways to consume content and depending on how you do it would also give a good idea on what type of content you consume. For my interests, I get almost all my news from social media platforms. Specifically X and Instagram. The biggest news stories I follow are sports news. From the national level of professional sports all the way down to the local level where I keep up with my college’s athletics as well. I rarely ever look up a specific news platform to get more content. If I am ever researching a current event I will just look up the event and usually pick whatever article is at the top without paying too much attention to which platform it is. As long as it’s one of the main trusted sites like The Washington Post or New York Times. I wouldn’t say I have a preference for preferring one site over another. I’ll always be either using Google or Safari to browse the internet. Depending on if I am on my phone or a computer.
When I consume media, I’ll do a mix of reading, watching videos, scrolling through slide shows of photos which is mostly done on social media. I will also listen to podcasts from time to time. Like I said, I consume almost everything on social media platforms like X and Instagram, and also TikTok depending on what comes up in my feed. My feeds are tailored to my interest in sports so that will be the news I see the most when consuming content. More reading is done on X as they’ll be a lot of threads of text with an opinion on an event or people will link articles in a tweet that I click on and read. Watching videos and scrolling through slideshows I do a lot on Instagram and Tiktok because that’s what is on their platforms. Of all these I would say reading and watching videos are my two favorite ways to consume news. They feel like the most detailed and can get the most information out of these two forms.
I have also interacted with news but pretty much only on X. I am pretty active responding to tweets or making my own. You do have to do a little extra work on social media to make sure everything you see is true. There are a lot of fake news accounts on those platforms so it’s good to get confirmation from multiple people posting a bit of news as that will tell you it is credible.
Overall I am actively involved in the news world today, specifically my interests in sports media which has taken over my feeds on social media. I am constantly consuming news and developing my own opinions based on things I see online. The media has a huge influence on our everyday lives.
