Three University of Wisconsin – Whitewater students were among the 700 American undergraduate students from 341 colleges and universities across the U.S. selected to receive the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

Karen Cano, a senior Spanish Education major, will use the Gilman scholarship to fund her upcoming eight-week student teaching placement in Cuenca, Ecuador during the Spring 2014 academic term.  Emily Kahl, a sophomore Spanish Education major, will study abroad at the University of Salamanca in Salamanca, Spain through Academic Programs International (API) next semester. Nichole Lattin, a junior majoring in Math and German, will participate in the Jacobs Semesters in Mathematics program at Jacobs University in Bremen, Germany, also in Spring 2014.

Gilman Scholars receive up to $5,000 to apply towards their study abroad program costs.  The program aims to diversify the students who study abroad and the countries and regions where they go.  Students receiving a federal Pell Grant from two- and four-year institutions who will be studying abroad or participating in an international internship for academic credit are eligible to apply.  Scholarship recipients have the opportunity to gain a better understanding of other cultures, countries, languages, and economies — making them better prepared to assume leadership roles within government and the private sector.

Congressman Gilman, who retired in 2002 after serving in the House of Representatives for 30 years and chairing the House Foreign Relations Committee, commented, “Study abroad is a special experience for every student who participates.  Living and learning in a vastly different environment of another nation not only exposes our students to alternate views, but also adds an enriching social and cultural experience.  It also provides our students with the opportunity to return home with a deeper understanding of their place in the world, encouraging them to be a contributor, rather than a spectator in the international community.”

The program is administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE).  The full list of students who have been selected to receive Gilman Scholarships, including students’ home state, university and country of study, is available on their website: www.iie.org/gilman. The study abroad program at the Spanish-American Institute of International Education (SAIIE), administered by UW-Platteville and open to UW-Whitewater students, offers semester, year, summer, and winterim program options.  In addition to offering coursework in Spanish, business, and the liberal arts, the SAIIE program offers students opportunities to immerse themselves into Spanish life by:

• living with a local Spanish family,
• volunteering or interning at a local school, business, or non-profit organization,
• joining a local soccer or rowing club, and 
• participating in an “intercambio,” or language exchange, with a local Spaniard.

UW-W Economics and German major Zachary Herriges has been awarded the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)’s Undergraduate Scholarship to support his study abroad experience for the 2013-14 academic year.  He will study at the University of Frankfurt through the Hessen – Wisconsin Exchange program. Herriges will be chronicling his international experience through his blog, which can be found here.

Herriges is the second UW-W student in two years to be awarded this prestigious scholarship. German major Christina Nitecke received the DAAD award to support her exchange studies at the University of Marburg in 2012-13, also through the Hessen – Wisconsin Exchange.

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, funded by the U.S. Department of State and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE) offers awards for undergraduate study abroad participants. The scholarship aims to support students of limited financial means, students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, and students traveling to non-traditional study abroad destinations.

UW-W’s exchange partner Tecnologico de Monterrey (ITESM) is a multi-campus university in Mexico. Many of its campuses, such as the Queretaro campus, have active semester, year, and summer programs for exchange students.  Queretaro boasts both a historical atmosphere (the city center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and rapid economic development, making it an ideal study abroad destination.

The Queretaro campus offers specialized coursework for international students focusing on Spanish language, Mexican culture, and business, as well as allowing exchange students to choose courses from the entire Tec de Monterrey – Campus Queretaro curriculum in English or Spanish.  UW-W students participating in this exchange regularly take advantage of the opportunity to do credit-bearing internships in a number of fields.  David interned in the Campus Queretaro International Programs office!

The National Science Foundation on Wednesday announced an expansion of its graduate fellows program, Graduate Research Opportunities Worldwide (GROW), that will allow selected graduate students to work for 3-12 months in one of eight countries. The idea is to encourage international collaboration early in researchers’ careers. The countries are Denmark, Finland, France, Japan, Norway, Singapore, South Korea and Sweden.
