{"id":49,"date":"2019-03-13T16:35:45","date_gmt":"2019-03-13T16:35:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/englishlanguageacademy\/?p=49"},"modified":"2019-03-13T16:46:40","modified_gmt":"2019-03-13T16:46:40","slug":"exploringuwwhistory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/englishlanguageacademy\/2019\/03\/13\/exploringuwwhistory\/","title":{"rendered":"Exploring UWW History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This past February,\u00a0 students in English 163: Introduction to U.S. Culture for International Students class learned about University of Wisconsin &#8211; Whitewater history by exploring the permanent exhibit, <em>The Royal Purple,<\/em> located on the ground floor of the University Center. <em>The Royal Purple<\/em> is UWW&#8217;s official student-run newspaper since 1901. Here, we share one student\u2019s reflections.<\/p>\n<p>Donfak Dongo (\u201cBih\u201d from Cameroon) reported that she was impressed to read about \u201cthe 16 grievances of the Afro-American students [which was] a turning point for the black student committee [\u2026] in February 18, 1969.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_51\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-51\" style=\"width: 349px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-51\" src=\"http:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/englishlanguageacademy\/files\/2019\/03\/163-pic.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"349\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/englishlanguageacademy\/files\/2019\/03\/163-pic.jpg 490w, https:\/\/blogs.uww.edu\/englishlanguageacademy\/files\/2019\/03\/163-pic-260x300.jpg 260w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 349px) 100vw, 349px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-51\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The headlining story for the February 1969 issue.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Donfak continued, \u201cBecause of the [students\u2019] firm rejection of President Carter\u2019s vague answers to the Afro-American\u2019s demands at a press conference of making the Black student Union culturally relevant, having a seat on the student senate, increasing financial aid and so forth, President Carter was compelled to pay the issue more attention to accommodate their needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on her UWW history \u201cfind,\u201d Donfak reflected: \u201cWhat I found interesting was the firmness and briefness in which the Afro-American students\u2019 representative addressed the topic to the press.
