Reading Material

The Crossman Gallery will be opening a new exhibit on Thursday, February 22, from 5-7 pm. The exhibit, Reading Material, features a curated selection of artists whose work reflects a deep understanding of the materials they used to create it. The exhibit continues through March 23. We will also be hosting a visit by Edgewood College Art Historian Melanie Herzog who will make a presentation in the gallery beginning at 4:30 pm.

Reading Material focuses on artworks in which the materials employed are deliberately selected for their social, personal, cultural and material histories and are, as a result, central to the meaning of the work. Invited artists include some with connections to the university as alumni or current faculty (Teresa Faris, Bethann Hanzlik-Moran, Rebecca Ratzlaff). Other artists come from regional, national and international locales. We are pleased to have Edgewood College Art Historian Melanie Herzog as a collaborative partner and she has contributed an essay for the exhibit. Additional curatorial expertise has been provided by UW-Whitewater Professor Susan Messer who provided the original concept for the exhibition.
