Tumbling

Tips And Tricks for Learning a New Skill

Tryouts are coming up and it is time to get all the skills you have been working hard for! We all know that it is easier said than done but here are some quick tips to boost your confidence and determination to stick your new skills.

1: Clean up

Before you can work on any new skills you should be sure to perfect and clean up any existing ones. Tumbling is all about progressions you must be able to safely and confidently do all the basics before you can learn the advanced skills.

Think about it this way, you didn’t learn to multiply before you learned to count.

2: Drills get the skills.

Tumbling is not always just something you can do and hope for the best. All of the drills that may seem boring in tumbling class are actually helping you in more ways than you know.

These drills are helping you to build the strength and confidence you need to successfully perform you new skill you are working on. These drills also help your body to understand the timing, shapes, and physics of the skill. Tumbling is not a normal body function, so in order to prevent injuries, you need to pay attention to the details and drills. If you can successfully perform a drill you will have the tools to nail the skill.

3. Repetition

I cannot stress this enough.

More reps= More opportunities to correct

Corrections build CONFIDENCE!

4. The Power Of The Mind

Your confidence will either make you or break you. You must believe in yourself before you can achieve your goals. One way to increase your confidence is by visualization.

When you visualize perfection, your brain can’t tell the difference between reality and imagination – it makes mental connections it needs to become good at whatever repetitions you throw at it. Whatever your mind believes, your body follows.

Visualization + Repetition + Corrections = Rapid Learning

If you want to become good at tumbling (or any other skills) as quick as possible, you can’t just go around throwing stuff. You need to train your mind, and your body and train it correctly. So remember, clean it up, drills get you skills, learn from each rep, and visualize until you can’t get it wrong.

This is a very well-thought out post. I think all of the information in this post is very accurate when it comes to tumbling. I like how you said you don’t learn to multiply before you can count because it really put what you were saying into perspective. I also really liked how you focused on the mind when it comes to tumbling. It reminds me of when Simone Biles messed up at the Olympics because her mind wasn’t in the right place. It is really important to have a clear, positive, and confident mindset before attempting dangerous skills like this so this post can definitely help people who don’t know where to start. Good job!
